Astellas is announcing a Sr Research Associate, Cell Based Therapies opportunity at their Astellas Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AIRM) site in Westborough, MA.


We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Senior Research Associate to join R&D to develop and implement mouse pre-clinical disease models in the vivarium, and support that work with complementary in vitro cell-based assays. This individual will collaborate closely within the team and across functional groups to advance pipeline programs.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage in vivo animal studies and strict adherence to IACUC guidelines and internal protocols.

  • Assist with operational management of the vivarium, including interfacing with vivarium management and facilitating efficient resolutions to logistical issues.

  • Performs day-to-day monitoring (animal welfare & in-life study measurements), housing, animal husbandry, and ordering, while collaborating with scientific team and veterinary staff.

  • Mouse ear tagging, dosing via IV, IP, SC, intraocular routes, identify and respond to clinical conditions, proper euthanasia, necropsy and tissue procurement for ex vivo analysis.

  • Independently contributes to scientific experiments, such as tissue post-processing and performing molecular biology or cell-based assays.

  • Proficiency in computer software and animal management software to record and independently analyze scientific data, interpret results, and optimize experimental designs.

  • Communicate results via both oral presentations and written reports

  • Ordering and monitoring of experimental supplies.

  • Detailed note-keeping skills in laboratory notebooks and appropriate databases in timely manner.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve technical problems independently.

  • Edit & review IACUC and IBC protocols and amendments.

  • Contribute to the development of novel in vitro assays and in vivo models, including formulating technical SOPs and data capture forms.

  • Ability to perform experiments efficiently and effectively

  • Demonstrate clear conceptual understanding of project goals, experimental design, data analysis and troubleshooting.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Organizational Context:

  • Reports to Sr. Scientist, Research Department

  • Communicates with other members of multidisciplinary teams



  • BA/BS in animal science, biology or equivalent with 3+ years relevant laboratory and vivarium-based experience or MS with 0-2 + years of experience.

  • Prior preclinical animal experience

  • Ensuring EH&S compliance within vivarium settings.

  • Understanding of dosing methodology and guidelines, such as site-specific volume and needle gauge restrictions.

  • Great organizational and documentation skills, keen attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaborate effectively in a team science environment.

  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Prism.

  • Adept learner with a willingness to learn new techniques.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.


  • AALAS Certifications (ALAT, LAT, LATG) preferred; CVT, SRA/SRT.

  • Strong prior animal handling and understanding of high-caliber animal care.

  • Experience with autoimmune and immune-compromised animal models.

  • Mammalian cell culture experience, both immortalized cell lines and primary cells.

  • Sound interpersonal (transparency, professionalism, and communication) and collaborative (team oriented, supportive, and interactive) mindset.

  • Current understanding of basic animal models, with knowledge of autoimmune-related disorders desired.

  • Organized and attention to detail for study record documentation according to company SOPs.
