Astellas is announcing a Scientist II/Sr. Scientist, PSC and Liver Research opportunity at their Astellas Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AIRM) site in Westborough, MA. Purpose: The Scientist develops strategy and technologies to perform experiments and analytical procedures, applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts. Coordinates research efforts and makes key technical contribution affecting the direction of the group and/or project. Applies expertise and breadth of knowledge to ongoing research and development of new project proposals. Essential Job Responsibilities: * Performs laboratory-based research independently and/or in collaboration with others * Exercises technical discretion in the design, execution and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project goals * Maintain multiple PSC lines and perform differentiation into endoderm and liver cell lineages * Performs viral transduction/engineering of pluripotent stem cell lines and/or their derivatives * Perform in vitro assays, data collection, analysis, and interpret results to characterize liver progenitor populations and derivatives thereof * Prepares technical reports, summaries, protocols, and quantitative analyses. Investigates, creates and develops new methods and technologies for project advancement * Formulate and implement processes ensuring preservation of cellular quality attributes * Maintains high level of professional expertise through familiarity with scientific literature and novel technologies and help manage external collaborations * Develop and adhere to SOPs and workflows with proper documentation Qualifications: Required * Education: * Scientist II: BS with 10+, MS with 7+, or Ph.D. with 3+ years laboratory experience * Sr. Scientist: BS with 12+, MS with 8+, or Ph.D. with 5+ years laboratory experience * Demonstrated industry experience or academic achievement, as evidenced by publications in high impact journals or drug development portfolio * Experience with human pluripotent stem cell culture (ESC or iPSC) and differentiation * Working knowledge of various in vitro assays for liver cell characterization * Working knowledge of preclinical animal models for liver diseases and liver pathophysiology * Solid working knowledge of molecular and cell biology techniques and signaling pathways governing liver progenitor cell differentiation * Excellent written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and collaborate within a team-based environment Preferred * Ph.D with 5+ years post-degree laboratory experience in liver diseases and liver pathophysiology, stem cell biology, developmental biology or related biological life sciences * Solid background in endoderm differentiation from human PSCs * Expertise on cell lineage characterization using flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, RNA seq. etc. are also desirable #LI-JA1 Equal Opportunity Employer Minorities/Women/Protected Veterans/Disabled Category Research and Development
