Astellas is announcing a Scientist II, Process Development opportunity at their Astellas Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AIRM) site in Westborough, MA.


Execute studies required to develop and improve upon existing production processes toward the goal of improving performance and increasing yield in the production of cell therapy products.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with other Process Science and Technology (PST) team members, designing and conduct laboratory experiments and tabulate results.

  • Assist in implementation and scale-up of production processes

  • Assist in planning and implementing the development of new processing materials, procedures and equipment

  • Assess equipment and processes to increase yield, purity and function of AIRM's cell products

  • Prepare study reports

  • Assist in drafting new and revising existing manufacturing and quality documents

  • Assist in establishing material specifications and improving manufacturing efficiencies

Organizational Context:

This position reports to the Associate Director of Product Development in the PST group. The individual will work closely with other members of the PST staff and will interact with R&D, Analytical Development and Translational Development groups.



  • Degree and experience in bioengineering or a life science. BS with 10+, MS with 7+ or PhD with 3+ years' experience.

  • Broad-based knowledge of cell biology.

  • Previous experience in process development of cell-based products including expertise in aseptic cell culture processing.

  • Exceptional oral and written skills.


  • Experience with embryonic stem cells, iPS cells and their differentiation.

  • Experience with disposable manufacturing, scale-up, pilot plant and/or automation.

  • cGMP experience in mammalian cell-based processing, products and characterization.
