Astellas is announcing a Scientist I, PSC & Vascular Research opportunity at their Astellas Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AIRM) site in Westborough, MA.

Purpose:

Conducts novel cell biology and molecular laboratory research. Coordinates research efforts and makes key technical contribution affecting the direction of the group and/or project. Performs experiments and analyltical procedures, applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts. Applies expertise and breadth of knowledge to ongoing research and development of new project proposals.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs laboratory-based research independently and/or in collaboration with others.

  • Makes detailed observations, analyzes data and interpret results.

  • Maintain multiple PSC lines and perform differentiation into mesoderm & vascular lineages.

  • Performs viral transduction/engineering of pluripotent stem cell lines and/or their derivatives.

  • Perform in vitro assays, data collection, analysis, and interpret results to characterize cardio/vascular progenitor populations and derivatives thereof.

  • Prepares technical reports, summaries, protocols, and quantitative analyses. Investigates, creates and develops new methods and technologies for project advancement.

  • Maintains high level of professional expertise through familiarity with scientific literature and novel technologies and help manage external collaborations.

  • Develop and adhere to SOPs and workflows with proper documentation.

  • Consistently completes work on time/in accordance with deadlines and does so with minimal supervision.

  • Communicates effectively with line manager and group members, building trust and engagement in the team ensuring timely completion of activities and projects.

  • Consistently achieves individual goals in alignment with overall business objectives.

Organizational Context:

  • Reports to: Principal Scientist

  • Communicates with other members of multidisciplinary teams

Qualifications:

Required:

  • PhD with 0-3 years, or exceptional MS with 6+ years of laboratory experience in cardiovascular, pulmonary diseases and stem cell biology, cell and tissue engrineering, developmental biology or related biological life sciences.

  • Extensive experience with human pluripotent stem cell culture (ESC or iPSC) and differentiation.

  • Experience using various in vitro assays for pluripotent stem cell-derived cell characterization.

  • Solid experience in flow cytometry, nucleic acid/protein isolation, qPCR, western blot, , ELISA, immunoflouresence and microscopy.

  • Excellent written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and collaborate within a team-based environment.

  • Ability to work flexible schedule including weekends.

Preferred:

  • Solid background in endothelial/vascular biology

  • Working knowledge of preclinical animal models for cardiovascular (Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, Critical Limb Ischemia, Aneurysm) or pulmonary (Acute Lung Injury, Acute respiratory distress syndrome) diseases indications.

  • Experience with gene editing technologies (CRISPER), bioinformatics analysis (SC-RNA Seq).

  • Experience working with stem cell-derived extra-celllular vesicles (isolation & characterization).
