Astellas is announcing a Scientist I, PSC and Liver Research opportunity at their Astellas Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AIRM) site in Westborough, MA.

Purpose:

Conducts novel cell biology and molecular laboratory research. Performs cutting-edge experiments and analytical procedures, applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts. Coordinates research efforts and makes key technical contribution affecting the direction of the group and/or project.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs laboratory-based research independently and/or in collaboration with others.

  • Maintains and scales-up functional iPSC-derived liver cells for in vivo studies.

  • Makes detailed observations, analyzes data and interprets results.

  • Performs viral transduction/engineering of pluripotent stem cell lines and/or their derivatives.

  • Performs in vitro assays, data collection, analysis, and interprets results to characterize liver progenitor populations and derivatives thereof.

  • Prepares technical reports, summaries, protocols, and quantitative analyses. Investigates, creates and develops new methods and technologies for project advancement.

  • Maintains high level of professional expertise through familiarity with scientific literature and novel technologies.

  • Develops and adheres to SOPs and workflows with proper documentation.

  • Consistently completes work on time/in accordance with deadlines and does so with minimal supervision.

  • Communicates effectively with line manager and group members, building trust and engagement in the team ensuring timely completion of activities and projects.

  • Consistently achieves individual goals in alignment with overall business objectives.

Organizational Context:

  • Reports to Senior Scientist

Qualifications:

Required:

  • PhD with 0-3 years', MS with 6+ years', or BS with 8+ years' of laboratory experience in stem cell biology, cell and tissue engineering, developmental biology or related biological life sciences.

  • Excellent working experience with aseptic mammalian cell culture skills.

  • Working knowledge of various in vitro assays for liver cell characterization.

  • Working knowledge of nucleic acid/protein isolation, RT-PCR, western blot, flow cytometry, ELISA and cell imaging.

  • Excellent written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and collaborate within a team-based environment.

  • Communicate results to team members and collaborators.

  • Ability to work flexible schedule including weekends.

Preferred:

  • Experience with human pluripotent stem cell culture (ESC or iPSC) and differentiation into endoderm and hepatocyte lineages.

  • Working knowledge of preclinical animal models of liver diseases.
