Astellas is announcing a Research Associate 2 opportunity at their Astellas Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AIRM) site in Westborough, MA.


The scope of this job is conducting cell culture experiments to support the development of cell therapy products.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Plans and conducts scientific experiments under supervision to support the development of cell therapy products.

  • Carries out maintenance, passaging, and freezing of multiple cell lines including human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs).

  • Performs characterization of hPSCs and their derivatives using common analytical methods in cellular and molecular biology.

  • Contributes to development and optimization of analytical methods.

  • Analyzes and summarizes data.

  • Troubleshoots and solves technical problems.

  • Maintains and organizes accurate record keeping in laboratory notebooks and appropriate databases in a timely manner.

  • Maintains inventory of reagents and disposables and orders supplies as needed.

  • Writes technical reports detailing procedures, outcomes, and observations.

The position has direct impact on the efficiency of clinical development.

Organizational Context:

Reports to an Associate Director of the Translational Development, Department of Technical Operations



  • BS. in cell or molecular biology or relevant discipline with 3+ years of academic or industry experience, or M.S. with 0-2 years'.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team

  • Ability to effectively handle multiple projects and work under deadlines

  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills

  • Two or more years of experience with tissue culture

  • Hands-on knowledge of molecular and cell biology techniques such as qPCR/ddPCR and immunostaining

  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends


  • Experience with pluripotent stem cells

  • Working knowledge of microscopy

  • Background in one of the following areas: stem cell biology, high-throughput sequencing, or imaging.
