Astellas is announcing a Field Director MSL, Oncology (East Coast region) opportunity.

Purpose & Scope of Position:

The Field Director Medical Science Liaison (MSL) leads a team of MSLs in a given therapeutic area (TA) and geography in support of the development and execution of Field medical activities that support the US medical strategies. The Field Director MSL will:

  • ensure their team executes on the medical plans that are developed in the given TA and the organization plans developed in the MSL territories;

  • inspire and coach others to excel by aligning people behind the Medical Affairs Americas (MAA) vision and motivating them to consistently commit to a standard of excellence and the achievement of superior results;

  • promote a culture of innovation, constructive challenge, team spirit and accountability;

  • lead teams to better understand healthcare delivery at the individual and account level.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the execution of functional plans to support the TA strategic medical plans in the field for assigned TA

  • Collaborate with field management and headquarters colleagues in TA to ensure alignment and manage appropriate expectations for MSL field support

  • Identify risks and opportunities, leveraging national MAA resources to support scientific needs

  • Manage and coordinate field activities and resources with alliance partners as needed

  • Determine MSL geographic location based on HCPs and key accounts, both individual and institutional, in assigned TA region

  • Develop a proactive approach to attract, hire, develop, coach and retain a diverse team of top talent and create initiatives to ensure the retention of strong performers

  • Support growth and development experiences that prepare individuals for broader responsibilities

  • Accomplish goals within boundaries established by regulatory and legal compliance in accordance with company policies and sound ethical practices

  • Implement routine field visits with the MSLs to assess performance and core competencies

  • Conduct annual and mid-year performance reviews with direct reports and participate in talent assessment and development. Provide recommendations on promotions and compensation.

  • Provide written and verbal feedback to ensure a productive, professional and motivated work group and a highly valued work environment

  • Ensure compliance Ensure compliance to Astellas and MAA policies, procedures and business rules

  • Assist the National Director MSL in training and mentoring new Field Directors across TAs

  • Provide input to the National Director MSL in development of the annual budget regarding anticipated project and administrative costs for region/therapeutic area and makes appropriate resource allocation

  • Anticipate and identify future training needs within TA and departmentally, and collaborate with National Director MSL and MAA training department to develop and implement training plan

  • Participate as an active member of the Field Medical Leadership Team with input into strategic process, development of annual TA and department objectives. Recommend system and structure enhancements to improve overall organization and department function.

  • Monitor progress on a quarterly basis. Plan and conduct Leadership Team Meetings on a routine basis at TA level.

  • At the direction of the National Director MSL, participate as a member of internal corporate committees and alliance committees, including those with company-wide scope as needed.

  • Manage departmental projects with regional and national scope to assist the National Director MSL as needed

  • Lead MSLs to better understand healthcare changes and delivery within the TA and region including ow these may provide opportunity for MAA

Quantitative Dimensions:

The Field Director MSL is responsible for providing people management of 5-10 direct reports (field based MSLs) within a given TA. They provide monthly performance feedback and mid-year and end of year reviews. They provide insights regarding field activity and environmental updates and leadership to MSLs at major medical congresses. The Field Director MSL works with TA leadership regarding proposed Field activities in support of the medical plans and budget needs to support them. They manage departmental projects with regional and national scope, as requested. The Field Director MSL monitors the customer relationship management database for compliance to business rules and to measure progress against business objectives and provides coaching of employees as needed. They champion operational excellence.

Organizational Context:

The Field Director MSL reports to the National Director MSL within a given therapeutic area and is direct manager to 5-10 MSLs in the TA. The Field Director MSL will also collaborate with:

  • Medical Affairs, Americas: VP/TA Head, Medical Directors, health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), Field HEOR, Medical Information, project managers and other cross functions within MAA.

  • Commercial: Health Systems

  • Other: Human Resources, Ethics & Compliance, Regulatory, Legal, Development

  • External: Collaborates with external alliance partners

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in a health-related science and at least 5 years of MSL or Medical Affairs experience in the pharmaceutical industry; OR a Doctoral Degree (e.g., MD/DO, PharmD, PhD) in a health-related science and at least 3 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry or relevant health-related science field

  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, lead and develop direct reports through direct experience or related skills

  • Knowledge of the regional healthcare landscape, e.g., institutions, practices, thought leaders, managed care environment, research networks, healthcare delivery systems and their inter-connectedness

  • Able to demonstrate managerial courage in the face of conflict

  • High degree of proficiency in managing multiple projects simultaneously

  • Understand and effectively communicate scientific information

  • Effective oral communication, written communication, presentation, and coaching skills

  • Able to manage a frequent travel schedule with 40-60% overnight travel

  • Demonstrated advanced computer skills [MS Office and Windows] and willing to learn new applications

  • Demonstrated ability to manage department resources

  • Demonstrated strong business acumen

  • Knowledge of account planning

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in a health-related science

  • Managing people experience is highly preferred

  • Demonstrated high degree of strategic thinking and decision making

  • Demonstrated high level of scientific expertise/competency in therapeutic area of responsibility

  • Previous experience in managing individual contributors
