Astellas is announcing a Senior Director, Medical Value & Strategy opportunity in the US, Tokyo or UK.
Purpose & Scope:
The Senior Director, Medical Value and Strategy will lead a specialized sub-team within the Medical Intelligence and Patient Insight (MIPI) unit in support of Research, early Development and externally facing teams (e.g., business development). These teams, through the leadership and guidance of the Senior Director, Medical Value and Strategy, will provide an understanding of the disease area(s) of interest, the potential utilization and medical need for early molecules and in the context of current SOC and treatment protocols. This role will lead a team in assisting science teams in assessing appropriate molecule-disease alignment, an understanding of target populations/subpopulations of interest and characteristics deemed necessary to successfully enter the treatment continuum. In addition to leading a team, the Senior Director, Medical Value and Strategy will be accountable for providing to the team they lead the details surrounding the clinical implications of disease areas of interest. This will include pathophysiology, standard of care, gaps in care, relevant treatment protocols, populations of interest, potential entry points into the treatment continuum, others. Accountability of all components of a MIPI team analysis are the responsibility of the person in this role.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
Leading a highly specialized global team of professionals; primarily responsible for the delivery of a comprehensive analysis of the entry point opportunities/patient need/medical value in disease areas of interest
Deep understanding of the disease areas of interest, pathophysiology, available standard of care, opportunities for new therapies and characteristics needed for success
An understanding of practitioner views on standard of care and expectations of new treatments options
Integration of the current development and competitive landscape
Analysis of treatment protocols currently in place as well as typical practice patterns of practitioners treating patients
Excellent communication skills with productive relationships with internal customers in R&D, Business units as well as internal collaborators.
The person in this role will manage multiple projects simultaneously in support of Research, Early Development and externally facing teams (e.g., business development). The goal is to inform and educate science teams regarding the clinical aspects of diseases of interest, the exam room experience as well as an opportunity analysis overview, beginning at the earliest point in the developmental continuum (Discovery). Ultimately, the focus is to assist teams in understanding potential opportunities to provide clinically meaningful benefit to patients through the delivery of new therapeutic options. This work will provide the foundational understanding of the disease, the current SoC, the patient and provider perspectives and the potential opportunity and risk of entering the specified disease space. As such, the quality of outputs and their impact on team decision-making will be a primary measurable aspect of success. Regular input from our internal customers will be utilized to determine quality of analyses provided, impact on decision-making and impact on understanding of the clinical implications of new therapies from an exam-room perspective. Additionally, efficiency of sub-team activities, quality of the work environment, number of work streams completed and quality of work will also be reviewed regularly and utilized as measurement tools for success.
This role will report to the Head, Medical Intelligence and Patient Insights (MIPI). The MIPI team will be located in the Patient Centricity division. It is not anticipated that this position will have any direct reports at this time but will have clear leadership responsibilities in a matrix setting as noted above.
12 years relevant pharmaceutical, clinical practice, biotechnology or medical device industry experience in diverse therapeutic areas
7 years Clinical care of patient experience required
Strong ability to network and lead in a complex global environment with multiple customers
Ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously and independently while providing innovative solutions to complex questions
Strong communication and presentation skills
High degree of comfort working in a global matrix environment
Ability to lead teams in a matrix environment and deliver high quality outputs consistently and on time
