Astellas is announcing a Rx+ New Business Opportunities Head opportunity. This position is global and can be based in Northbrook, Illinois or Brisbane, California. Purpose & Scope:
The Rx+ New Business Opportunities Head is responsible for a continuous and robust portfolio of new, promising business opportunities, aligned with the Rx+ strategic direction. The role provides leadership, strategic direction and supports decision-making for generation and incubation of all internal and external pre-BAP Rx+ ideas, including the activities of the Rx+ Venture Capital team. This responsibility extends from the earliest stages to the proposal of Business Acceleration Programs (BAP) that represent viable business opportunities to drive creation and delivery of VALUE.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
Build a continuous and robust pipeline of new Rx+ pre-BAP business opportunities through establishing internal ideation processes, capabilities and external partnering, aligned with the Rx+BA strategy and Astellas' VISION to create and deliver VALUE.
Create and maintain a culture of continuous learning, curiosity and exploration among colleagues involved with ideation and incubation activities and coach and mentor platform-based technical/scientific colleagues to develop and refine their understanding and expertise related to issues specific to the Rx+.
Provide strategic direction and leadership of Rx+ programs/projects in idea generation phase and preclinical research phase of BAP, working closely with international colleagues across functional areas and with external partners.
Work through Open Business Creation Team (VC Team) to identify opportunities to enhance the pipeline of Rx+ pre-BAP and to identify opportunities to enhance Business Accelerator Programmes. Responsible for integrating those opportunities into Rx+ BA with appropriate resourcing and budgets
Accountable for ensuring Rx+ ideas and R+ projects move quickly and efficiently to go/no-go decision points and agreed milestones, based on transparent processes that prioritise medical and scientific rigor and robust business rationale.
Ensure Rx+BA, in particular the Leadership Team and Research & Incubation Group, have a robust understanding of current scientific and technical trends relating to Rx+BA strategy, through continuous landscape assessment and scoping activities, including t hrough VC partnerships.
Support the establishment and maintenance of research collaborations with academia or external partners, as necessary, for specific programmes or technology areas and ensure all research work meets necessary quality, regulatory compliance, ethical and research facility's rules.
Advise and support development and commercial members of Rx+ to assure quality scientific and non- clinical inputs are factored into key decisions across the Rx+ activities. This includes collaborating with Business Development in evaluating later stage external opportunities and participating in the technical review of Rx+ based licensing opportunities, and providing due diligence for licensing opportunities.
Evaluate and manage the Rx+ research and incubation resources and budget to ensure optimal resources are applied to research projects.
The Rx+ New Business Opportunities Head is accountable and responsible for the successful research and generation of Rx+ ideas, proposals of BAPs and transparent, effective, efficient decision making covering hundreds of potential ideas and up to 20 projects at any one time.
Responsible for an operating budget of between 3-5 million USD.
Team interacts with up to 40 separate academic and external partners at any one time, in relation to on-going projects.
Responsible for up to 5 venture capital partnerships.
The Rx+ New Business Opportunities Head reports on solid-line basis to Senior VP, Rx+ Business Accelerator Head and is a member of the Rx+BA Division Leadership Team.
Manages a staff of approximately 15-20 direct reports, consisting of 8-12 in the Research & Incubation Group and 3-6 in the Open Business Team (Venture Capital Team)
Participate in cross-functional committees and ensure optimal deployment of resources with global organization and perspectives in mind.
Master's in scientific field is required.
Minimum of 5 years experience leading ideation and incubation activites for innovative areas in healthcare and lifesciences.
Demonstrated experience of collaborating with start-ups and venture capitalists in pursuit of improving patients' lives through use of new technologies and approaches.
Demonstrated experience of leading global teams in the successful research of drug therapies, medical devices or medical software on time, on budget, and with measurable peer review for quality assurance and regulatory compliance.
A deep and broad understanding of how to communicate and work well with scientists and external collaboration partners worldwide.
Strong collaborative skills- able to work cross-functionally and understand the needs of R&D, Licensing and Acquisitions, External Partners, Medical Affairs, Portfolio Planning and regional business functions
Strong leadership presence; able to manage big picture while also driving for results; outstanding judgment and decision making skills.
Preferred: Experience of successfully developing non-pharma healthcare technologies in a pharma companyAn MD or PhD with a specialty or equivalent experience in the Rx+ or other related specialties strongly preferred. Benefits:
