Astellas is announcing a Executive Director, Rx+ Commercial Head opportunity. This position is global and can be based in Northbrook, Illinois or Brisbane, California. The ED, Rx+ Commercial Head is responsible for providing all of the necessary commercial capability and expertise needed to support Rx+Business Accelerator projects from ideation through to the point where they are mature enough to require their own commercial capabilities.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Manages and leads the effective functional capability for Commercial including marketing, commercial development, market intelligence, and business development across the Rx+ Business Accelerator, in line with the culture of lean start-ups with uncertain business challenges.

  • Manages the commercial team in the Rx+ Business Accelerator hub, allocating resources in support of projects, until BAPs achieve sufficient pre-launch business maturity to establish their own commercial functions.

  • Creates and implements commercial strategy in support of moving Rx+ businesses towards maturity and commercialization across all Rx+ Business Accelerator projects from ideation stage though to launch, working closely with Business Producers (BP), other Rx+ functional heads and others in Rx+ BA, and relevant internal stakeholders including Rx Commercial and M&D, globally.

  • Provides commercial input to project evaluation and ensures commercial decision-making at the Rx+BA portfolio level and at the individual BAP/project level is based on robust market intelligence, market research and field testing of commercial hypotheses and business models.

  • Identifies relevant commercial partners, external to Astellas, to achieve commercial strategies and defines, negotiates and agrees nature of partnership to ensure BAPs and projects can realise their goals and objectives.

  • Develops novel business models through external commercial /business collaboration for ensuring effective business framework on individual and cross /multiple Rx+ programs in global.

  • Establishes commercial capabilities in-house or through external partners that can be applied across multiple projects or BAPs.

  • Contributes to overall Rx+Business Accelerator direction and strategy as the commercial expert on the divisional leadership team.

Quantitative Dimensions:

  • ED provides commercial support for 10-20 Ideation/Incubation and Pre-BAP projects, managing the budget to provide this support.

  • ED provides global commercial support for all projects included in Rx+ Business Accelerator Programmes (BAPs), typically covering support for 10 BAPs, working with the relevant Business Producers to define required budgets and commercial direction.

Organizational Context:

  • The ED, Rx+ Commercial Head reports to SVP, Rx+ Business Accelerator Head.

  • The ED, Rx+ Commercial Head manages a staff of approximately 20 direct reports.

  • Direct reports are located globally.

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver commercial needs of early-stage businesses from at least 5 years of commercial experience in start-ups and small companies across multiple geographies

  • Deep knowledge and understanding for global business assessment, commercial development, marketing, and partnering /business development with Rx+ Business (e.g. digital, device, diagnosis and data-based healthcare businesses)

  • Broad experience across various commercial functions including, strategic marketing, brand marketing, market intelligence and sales

  • Experience of partnering with third party companies to achieve demonstrable commercial goals

  • Excellent communication skills across functions, geographic regions and cultures

  • Experience of leading global teams

  • Excellent presentation /recommendation skills

  • Ability to quickly develop credibility as a thought-partner with senior management and external partners

  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills

  • Experience of working in a pharmaceutical company or other large healthcare company

  • Direct experience in managing relatively large scale projects, including M&A, development project, commercial development, new modality project etc.

  • Broad business experience gained in a variety of functions including research, development, manufacturing, finance, business planning, marketing or corporate function

  • Knowledge/experience of running financial models and elaborate the outcome in a concise and effective manner
