Astellas is announcing a Research Associate I, Protein Engineering opportunity at their Xyphos site in South San Francisco, CA.

Purpose:

The primary focus of the Research Associate I in Protein Engineering will be as a key contributor in support of protein production, purification and analytical characterization / quality control for research purposes. This position will work primarily in a laboratory setting with Scientist and R&D teams.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Supports protein physicochemical analysis / stability studies and demonstrates their predictive value for reagent performance and quality.

  • Supports protein purification and implementation of high throughput / automation for purification using various resin chemistry.

  • Manages protein engineering inventory and database: Standardizes processes, documentation, reagent inventories and captures data to record and share information with Xyphos scientific research team.

  • Cultures and maintains established cell lines, performs DNA transfection for target protein expression and molecular cloning when needed.

  • Performs experiments with careful attention to detail, accurately records procedure / data / results in a timely manner, notes and reports experiments / results that may be out of trend.

  • Collaborates with other members of the R&D team, with other teams within Xyphos.

  • Involved with R&D laboratory management and operation; performs other duties as assigned or special projects as needed.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Biotechnology Certification or AA 2-4 or BS degree with 0-3 years of laboratory experience

  • Experience with different protein purification chromatography methods e.g. protein A, Ni-NTA, SEC

  • Experience with analytical / protein stability characterization techniques e.g. SDS-PAGE/CE, aSEC, cIEF/cIEX, HIC and DSF

  • Diligence and meticulous attention to detail in experimentation and record keeping

  • Ability to analyze, interpret data and troubleshooting

  • Self-motivated and willingness to learn and enthusiasm to be part of the development of a cutting-edge therapy platform

  • Adaptability to meet critical production timelines

  • Ability to work independently with supervision and ability to effectively collaborate with other teams; collegiality is a critical attribute

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Strong work ethic with a dedicated mindset of proactively identifying and productively filling gaps

Preferred:

  • Experience in molecular biology and DNA transformation/transfection

  • Experience in SPR (Biacore) /BLI (Octet) kinetic analysis platforms

  • Experience with mammalian cell cultures, expressing and purifying antibodies/secreted proteins
