About Astellas Gene Therapies

Astellas Gene Therapies is developing genetic medicines for patients with rare, life-threatening diseases. Based on our innovative approach to developing genetic medicines, as well as our industry-leading internal manufacturing capability and expertise, we have become the Astellas Center of Excellence for the newly created Genetic Regulation Focus Area. We are currently exploring three gene therapy modalities: gene replacement, exon skipping gene therapy, and vectorized RNA knockdown, with plans to expand our focus and geographic reach under Astellas. We are based in San Francisco, with manufacturing and laboratory facilities in South San Francisco and Sanford, North Carolina.

The Role

The Director, Gene Therapy Project Management is a leader within the Program Management department providing excellence in direction, strategic planning and Project Management to members of other disciplines. Accountable for leading & delivering Project Management activities for assigned products, Core Teams, Extended Teams, CDP's, TPP's and integrated plans. Works in partnership with the relevant GDPLs and functional Team Leaders. Provides strategic direction and oversight in ensuring execution and delivery of Core Team tactics on time and within budget.

  • Development and maintenance of excellence in strategic planning and project management oversight of all assigned program activities, as well as project management methodologies, tools, and competencies.

  • In partnership with the GDPL, leads the development and budget processes for assigned GT COE Programs.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Lead, create, drive and ensure effective project management to all aspects of the Core Team functioning globally and collaborate with Core and Extended Team members to ensure effective execution. Leads the Project Management Extended Team. Works in close collaboration with the GDPL in the delivery of the integrated plan and all Core Team activities. Monitors, tracks and reports timelines, budgets, resource and risks related to all Core Team and Extended Team activities. Works proactively and in collaboration with all stakeholders to identify and manage constraints and risks, facilitating resolution

  • Serve as the the Global Project Management Lead (GPML) for assigned products in GT COE Programs. Serve as strategic thought partner with the GDPL to optimize global program strategy and objectives and team performance

  • For assigned products, lead the execution of the annual update to the integrated program plan and annual budget process for GT COE Programs, including quarterly forecasting and proactively manage and communicate budget and budget variance to the GDPL, Program Management Team and COE Leadership.

  • Supports program management activities including planning, tracking, reporting, global risk assessment and mitigation, and lessons-learned. Creates, owns and maintains an integrated program timeline

  • Works closely with Program Management & Strategy Leadership, COE Leadereship Forum and other cross functional team members (including, GT-RTO, GT-C and GT-MD functional leads, and external partners) to ensure full and timely implementation and execution of Core Team activities related to integrated program plans.

  • May have supervisory responsibility with performance evaluation responsibility of direct reports as well as assignment of project responsibilities within functional area as needed.

  • Leads, develops, and executes strategies focused on Project Management, process improvements, system enhancements, industry benchmarking and organizational learning. Drives continuous improvement. May be responsible for upgrading supporting infrastructure, resources, and tools to maximize process efficiencies.

  • Provide input, direction, create, and approve plans for GT Project Management to meet both functional and departmental goals. Ability to optimize departmental understanding of project contributions to corporate goals.Ensure cross-functional integration of tasks and commitment to business objectives and goals.

  • May be a member of the Project Management Forum and member of multiple task forces / committees to develop new processes and improve existing processes within the organization and governance model.

  • Delegate for Head of Project Management for assigned initiatives and committees.

About you

Must Have/Required

  • Bachelor's Degree and 8+ years industry experience, or Masters degree and at least 5 years industry experience

  • 7+ years project management experience in healthcare industry, preferably in product development, project management, or equivalent discipline.

  • 5+ years experience managing multiple strategic and tactical projects

  • Experience supporting programs to goal achievement including development of complex drug development project strategy

  • Previous team leadership experience and demonstration of working autonomously

  • Track record of delivering in a fast-paced, innovative, dynamic environment while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient

  • Proven decision-making skills leading to successful outcomes

  • Strong written and oral communication

  • Effective leader under time pressure, team player, accurate and patient.

  • Ability to influence effectively without authority

  • Clear understanding of the principles and practices of project management and use/application of project management tools

May Have/Preferred

  • PMP certification

  • MBA

  • Work experience across multiple cultures and countries / regions

  • Management experience, including mentoring employees within the department
