Universal Cells , an affiliate of Astellas located in Seattle, WA, is focused on the development and commercialization of stem cell and regenerative medicine therapies. Universal Cells (UCI) is announcing a Scientist I, Mitochondrial Biology opportunity at their facility in Seattle, WA .

Purpose:

This Scientist I position is a laboratory-focused role with a primary purpose of providing scientific expertise towards assay development to assess mitochondrial biology and cellular metabolism. This role will involve work with hematopoietic stem cells and functional metabolic studies of our Universal Donor Cell.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop assays to measure cellular energy and functional output.

  • Design and execute experiments to assess changes in cellular metabolism.

  • Design and utilize PCR and sequencing methods to characterize different cell populations.

  • Culture and differentiate pluripotent stem cells to hematopoietic lineages.

  • Prepare technical reports, summaries, protocols, and presentations. Regularly present findings at group meetings.

  • Apply scientific rigor to all aspects of the job, including experimental design, analysis, and interpretation.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across Universal Cells and other Astellas sites.

  • Perform other duties as assigned or special projects as needed.

Quantitative Dimensions:

  • The Scientist I position is integral to achieving our scientific strategy for pre-clinical studies of our edited Universal Donor Cell in collaboration with other Astellas sites.

  • Potential to generate IP.

Organizational Context:

  • Reports to Senior Scientist.

  • Closely collaborates with colleagues within Research & Development at Universal Cells and other Astellas sites.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Ph.D. in Biology or a related field, with an additional 0-3+ years of relevant post-graduate experience, MS degree with 6+ years of relevant experience, or BS with 8+ years of relevant experience.

  • Familiarity with mitochondrial biology and cellular metabolism, including relevant methods in the field.

  • Proficiency with mammalian cell culture.

  • Strong molecular biology skills (e.g. PCR, qPCR, DNA sequencing, etc.).

  • Demonstrated ability to move a project forward and a strong publication record.

  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills with scientific attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently and ability to effectively collaborate with other teams.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong work ethic with a passion for working in a fast-paced, dynamic and diverse work environment.

Preferred:

  • Experience with hematopoietic stem cells and differentiation.

  • Experience with multi-color flow cytometry.

  • Experience using FACS and magnetic purification to isolate specific cell populations.

  • Utilization of next-generation sequencing platforms and analysis of large datasets.
