The Executive Director, Patient Advocacy & Engagement will be responsible for building a successful global patient advocacy department that is tailored to meet the specific needs of the rare disease communities that we partner with at Astellas Gene Therapies (AGT). This person will develop the department's global patient advocacy strategy, grow the patient advocacy team and partner with leadership to identify the resources and processes needed to best support AGT's business objectives. This person will champion the patient perspective by ensuring that insights are gathered from the patient community to inform key business- and program-level decisions.
The ideal candidate serves as expert advisor on patient advocacy, while working collaboratively across the organization. They will be focused on expanding a function that is received and will be highly regarded by external stakeholders and across the internal organization
This position is based in San Francisco. Remotely-based candidates will be considered.
Lead Patient Advocacy & Engagement strategies across the company
Manage a global team that is knowledgeable of local regulations and practices
Partner with leadership and key stakeholders internally to develop policies, methodologies and standard operating procedures required to successfully execute upon department strategies while maintaining compliance
Standardize the company's approach for engagement with patient communities by developing a process for integrating patient insights across the continuum from early drug discovery through commercialization, including:
Protocol development, informed consent forms and processes, reduction of trial burden, communicating interim trial data
Engagement with regulatory agencies and incorporation of patient insights into key regulatory submissions
Generation of data to support market access and reimbursement
Advise leadership and cross-functional partners on best practices and industry trends related to the rare disease patient community
Standardize the company's global charitable contribution policies and processes and oversee contributions and partnerships with nonprofit organizations
Establish strong cross-functional partnerships with Global Medical Affairs, Commercial, Research & Manufacturing, Regulatory, Government Affairs and other key departments to ensure that the patient perspective is integrated into all key program decisions and to ensure alignment in strategy and execution
Collaborate with Corporate Communications and Human Resources to ensure AGT's core values are clearly communicated both externally and internally
Participate in key external engagement opportunities to showcase AGT's approach to patient advocacy
BS/BA or masters in related field with 10+ years' experience in a development, advocacy, communications, or commercial role leading patient engagement, advocacy, and/or relations
5+ years of experience in rare disease Patient Advocacy; global experience preferred
Strong people management skills with proven ability and enthusiasm to lead, motivate, inspire, develop, and encourage staff
Strategic, innovative leader with excellent interpersonal, verbal, written and presentation communication skills; experience engaging in executive-level interactions
Experience partnering with national and international rare disease umbrella organizations; experience with genetics medicines preferred

Ability to travel up to 30% domestic and international
