About Astellas Gene Therapies

Astellas Gene Therapies is developing genetic medicines for patients with rare, life-threatening diseases. Based on our innovative approach to developing genetic medicines, as well as our industry-leading internal manufacturing capability and expertise, we have become the Astellas Center of Excellence for the newly created Genetic Regulation Focus Area. We are currently exploring three gene therapy modalities: gene replacement, exon skipping gene therapy, and vectorized RNA knockdown, with plans to expand our focus and geographic reach under Astellas. We are based in San Francisco, with manufacturing and laboratory facilities in South San Francisco and Sanford, North Carolina.

The Role

The Associate Director for Epidemiology & Outcomes Research plays a vital role in Medical Affairs and will support the development and implementation of research strategies to provide supplementary evidence and long-term follow-up for Astellas Gene Therapies products and therapeutic areas of interest. The role offers opportunities to develop and execute innovative initiatives that can have a meaningful impact. The Associate Director reports to the Senior Director, Global Evidence, Outcomes Research & Registries within Medical Affairs.

The ideal candidate would demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities and organizational skills; be comfortable picking up new skills, and working in a flexible, dynamically changing and fast-paced environment. This position will be remote.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Contribute significantly to the development of global epidemiological forecasting and strategy for rare diseases.

  • Critical reviews of epidemiologic literature to achieve research goals; systematically review and prepare critical summaries.

  • Work effectively across teams to communicate about disease occurrence, disease understanding, payer evidence, and forecasting.

  • Plan and coordinate scientific dissemination of epidemiology data in consultation with internal partners and external stakeholders.

  • Contribute to cross-functional activities as epidemiologist representative.

  • Identify outcomes research-related evidence needs and develop strategic plans and tactics for outcomes research in rare diseases and gene therapy products.

  • Provide analytical and consultative support to HEOR-related activities, including large healthcare database research for development of value evidence strategies.

  • Interact with internal teams to provide insights into health technology assessment requirements and guide execution of outcome research data collection.

  • Ensure that scientific data resulting from the execution of epidemiology and outcomes research are appropriately positioned internally and externally.

About you

Must Have/Required

  • Master's Degree (MS, MPH) (or similar degree) in epidemiology, biostatistics, outcomes research, health economics or a relevant scientific field

  • 2 years of advanced training or relevant experience, preferably in industry

  • Prior experience in rare diseases and/or neuromuscular disorders

  • Sound methodological training in epidemiology, biostatistics, outcomes research, data science or related area relevant to observational research.

  • Familiarity with evidence generation requirements for payers and/or health technology assessments.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, ability to think critically, and effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks.

  • Excellent and effective written, verbal communication and presentation skills; medical writing experience beneficial

  • Flexible, adaptable, self-motivated, able to prioritize, and able to manage/progress a large volume of work with minimal supervision individually and as part of a cross-functional team.
