Astellas Gene Therapies is developing genetic medicines for patients with rare, life-threatening diseases. Based on our innovative approach to developing genetic medicines, as well as our industry-leading internal manufacturing capability and expertise, we have become the Astellas Center of Excellence for the newly created Genetic Regulation Focus Area. We are currently exploring three gene therapy modalities: gene replacement, exon skipping gene therapy, and vectorized RNA knockdown, with plans to expand our focus and geographic reach under Astellas. The Associate Director, Business Analytics & Insights plays a vital role in our Gene Therapy Center of Excellence (GT CoE) organization. This position is Headquarters based in San Francisco.
Reporting to the Senior Director, Business Analytics, Insights, & Operations, this individual will be responsible for developing market insights that will be used across the Global GTx COE to make informed, objective decisions and to define and implement strategies and tactics to support successfully bringing our promising, innovative therapies to market. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of Gene Therapy and Ultra Rare patient populations, recent launch experience and strong executional knowledge of patient finding techniques, AI technical proficiencies, algorithm development skills, patient insights research experience and the ability to interface with the Global Insights & Analytics teams within Astellas. They will interface and align with Global Insights & Analytics teams to generate key HCP, patient, payer, and market insights and translate them to support or challenge our strategic vision and initial launch plans for AT132 and future pipeline. They will partner with our commercial, product development teams and Astellas to understand and influence strategic imperatives, act as a thought partner, and encourage evidence-based decisions making.
Given our acquisition by Astellas, a key part of the role will be dedicated to a successful integration leading the coordination and interface with Astellas Global Insights & Analytics team and other resources to optimize launch. The individual will operate in a highly matrixed and collaborative organization with a partnership lens to move the business forward.
Business Analytics & Insights: Lead, identify, and communicate insights, strategic business implications and actionable recommendations to support commercial, development programs and overall portfolio decisions. Utilize research and analytics as a competitive advantage. Apply innovative thinking to our disruptive therapies. Example responsibilities include:
Primary Market Research: Lead and oversee the design, execution, and analysis of primary market research across target audiences including vendor selection, contract execution and management.
Secondary Data Analytics: Lead and manage the generation of comprehensive market and customer insights by leveraging secondary data sources.
Competitive Intelligence: Lead the process to closely monitor and report market and competitor events and implications to ensure commercial and product development teams and other senior leaders have the external view necessary to make informed, objective decisions.
Forecasting: Provide SME input into the creation of data-driven forecasts to inform global and country-specific assessments and forecasts (revenue, vials, patients treated).
Astellas Collaboration and Integration: Interface with the Global Astellas Insights & Analytics teams to leverage these resources where applicable to enhance/complement our business needs and opportunities and to complete projects.
Patient Finding: Lead and work with internal and external stakeholders to assess, select, implement, and manage programs to find patients to support commercial and clinical programs including managing strategic partnerships with genetic testing labs and other technologies. Lead patient finding efforts around AI creation models and developing algorithms specific to rare and orphan diseases to improve patient finding endeavors.
Partner with Field Teams and IT to build out CRM system to organize/prioritize Field Team outreach efforts.
Identify, assess, and implement new opportunities to enhance our patient finding capabilities throughout the world.
GT CoE Strategy: Partner with commercial, medical, clinical and product development teams to understand and influence strategic imperatives, strategic thinking, act as a thought partner, and encourage evidence-based decision making. Support Business Development and portfolio strategy related projects and decisions. Align patient finding strategy and results into the COE strategy.
5+ years of industry experience serving on teams involved with the business analytics/insights generation/forecasting function.
Integration experience within a highly matrixed organization.
Collaboration and leadership skills.
Ability to lead without authority demonstrating agility and flexibility through the process.
Expert knowledge of qualitative and quantitative market research methodologies and applications, including an expert understanding of data sources in the biopharmaceutical industry.
Strong problem-solving and quantitative skills that can be leveraged for uncovering quick, unconventional, and meaningful solutions to ensure speed of execution and quality are not compromised.
Experience selecting, managing, and overseeing external vendors and outsourced partnerships.
Ability to think strategically about issues impacting an entire portfolio of therapeutics across geographies and stages of development.
Experience managing multiple senior stakeholders, prioritizing across a multitude of responsibilities, and allocating resources to drive maximum impact.
Ability to flourish in both an entrepreneurial biotech and large, highly matrixed environments, with a strong ability to prioritize and work under pressure.
Excellent and effective written, verbal communication and strong formal presentation skills.
Ability to succeed with ambiguity and uncertainty.

BA, MBA or Advanced Scientific Degree
Experience with rare diseases, neuromuscular diseases and/or gene therapy products
Experience in a small company and high growth, lean and fast-paced environment
