Purpose & Scope of Position:

The Senior Manager, Venture Capital Management collaborates with the members of Rx+BA to lead and support a wide range of initiatives in assigned functions in open business creation (OBC) in Rx+BA based on the direction of senior managers. This position supports creating overall VC strategy and identifying focus areas of strategic collaborations with VC partners in order to maximize the strategic VC partnerships. This position is responsible for monitoring, managing and conducting strategic collaborative activities with partner venture capital (VCs) under oversight of senior managers. This position supports various Rx+ programs and strategic initiatives by close collaboration with relevant stakeholders including internal functions and external experts including VC partners.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

Lead some parts of processes and practices for assigned function within the functions listed below based on the direction of Open Business Creation head.

  • VC Management

  • Under oversight of senior members of NBO and OBC, lead communication with and management of multiple partner VCs as the limited partner (LP), and lead internal corporate LP related activities, including leading internal process for capital call, monitoring fund activities, support internal process for LPAC decision making.

  • Understand goals and activities of partner VC, and support managing relationships with partner VCs with a goal of facilitating and supporting promotion of Rx+ programs and initiatives.

  • Report to top managements and Rx+ leadership team of fund activities with his/her and insights.

  • Communicate internal stakeholders to understand Rx+ strategic direction, Rx+ programs and Rx+ initiatives to lead the above activities. Identify areas where learnings and information from VC partnerships can be useful.

  • If relevant, work at a partner VC as a representative member of Astellas who have access to day-to-day activities of the partner VC. Such activities at partner VC include landscaping, focus area identification, screening, due diligence, investment decision and support management of portfolio companies.

  • Acquire insights and network established through the activities above, in those areas relevant to Rx+ (e.g. digital health, medical device, mechanical engineering, new business model in healthcare, data management), including other limited partners of partner VCs, lead certain activities to find suitable areas, opportunities and information which will result in or play significant contribution in Rx+ program advancement from certain aspects including Rx+ strategic initiatives.

  • Obtain collective learnings from partner VCs, identify areas relevant and valuable to Rx+ , digest and mask confidential information if necessary, prepare sharable information to Rx+ and improve the format and style to maximize the organizational learnings from VC partnerships.

  • Lead and support preparation and facilitation of meetings between VC partners with Rx+ and other Astellas members including senior management, as applicable. Support Rx+ members to get best outcome from the interactions leveraging insights and know-how obtained through activities above.

  • Strategy & Communication

  • Support planning the overall VC strategy, identify the focused area, creating roadmap, and implement the plan to manage and maximize the strategic value of VC partnerships for Rx+.

  • Promote effective and efficient communication with internal/external relevant stakeholders with technical/scientific and business view to develop and refine the understanding and expertise for issues specific to the Rx+ business fields*.

  • Increase sensitivity for Rx+ business fields* and accumulate knowledge and latest information in Rx+BA.

  • PJ management & Implementation

  • Support or lead OBC and/or other Rx+ projects and/or initiatives including those derived from VC management related activities.

  • Support or lead evaluation of external opportunities for possible partnership for various Rx+ projects and/or initiatives.

  • Support or lead Rx+ projects and/or initiatives in aspects of external perspectives and external partnerships, leveraging network and know-how on his/her own as well as those acquired through the activities above.

  • Support enhancing organizational capabilities, leveraging network and know-how on his/her own as well as those acquired through the activities above.

Quantitative Dimensions

  • This position is responsible for managing up to 3 VC partners

  • This position is responsible for supporting 1-2 Rx+ projects or initiatives.

Organizational Context

  • This position reports on solid-line basis to Head of Open Business Creation.

  • This position communicates with and collaborates with Rx+ LTs, BPs, relevant internal stakeholders within and outside of Rx+BA globally.

  • This position communicate and collaborates with partner venture capitals, prospective partners and external experts globally.

  • This position is required to travel domestically and/or internationally.



  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • Minimum of five years’ experience in Rx+ Business Field. Rx+ Business field include pharmaceuticals, biopharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, diagnosis, digital health or other healthcare industry.

  • Proactive understanding of emerging technologies and businesses models.

  • Experience in implementing complex projects which require cross functional efforts.

  • Ability to communicate and work well with internal and external stakeholders with various background.

  • Leadership presence; able to drive for results; operate tactically, team player and self-starter.

  • Proactive interpersonal and networking abilities to interact and influence top/senior leadership members internally.

  • Good presentation /recommendation skills for decision making of the Rx+ managements

  • Abilities to work with sense of speed under the multi-cultural environment

  • Abilities to overcome difficulties with enthusiasm and passion

  • Passion in innovation in healthcare toward providing value to patients


  • A master or advanced degree or equivalent experience in business or in Rx+ related specialties.

  • Experience in working at or with start-ups, venture capitals, payor and/or employers.

  • Experience in working in business development or open innovation in pharmaceutical, digital health, medical device, life science or other healthcare industry.

  • Experience in working in a global organization
