Purpose and Scope:

The Sr Manager, Medical Information (MI) is responsible for supporting the development of global MI content, in alignment with the global MI content strategy and Medical Communications Strategic Plan and handles escalations of complex MI inquiries for assigned Astellas therapeutic areas (TA) and/or products. The Sr Manager, in close partnership with the Associate Director, Medical Information, ensures the content and format of content are aligned with regional and local omnichannel needs to meet both the information and channel preferences of the scientific and medical community to improve patient care.

The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that Astellas MI content in the global repository are the latest, approved content and monitors for pertinent scientific/pharmaceutical and competitive intelligence, updating content as needed.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

Content Development and Expertise

  • Proactively identifies needs for specific content development and dissemination

  • Influences across regional MA and affiliates, to ensure the development of relevant global content and its appropriate use.

  • Contextually evaluates large amounts of data into concise deliverables that are focused, objective, balanced and supported by applicable references

  • Identifies new pertinent scientific/pharmaceutical data, MI insights and competitive intelligence that is significant enough to update or create new content

  • Works with translation/medical writing vendor(s) to ensure delivery of compliant, high quality MI content according to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and good MI practices

  • Evaluates and researches escalated complex MI inquiries for assigned products

Omnichannel Content

  • Creates content in formats that enable omni-channel interactions aimed at addressing the informational needs of our customers (e.g., HCPs, patients), ensuring MI communication is timely, relevant, and delivered in preferred formats/channels

  • Contributes to expanding digital capabilities and drive innovative communication methods that improve customer experience

  • Ensures that MI deliverables align with relevant Astellas SOPs/Policies and industry standards

Matrix Teams

  • Participates on applicable global matrix teams, including the integrated Medical Communication Product Teams and Core Medical Teams (as needed) to align on content development

  • Participates in best practices development and analysis of process gaps across matrix teams

  • Identifies needs/gaps regarding MI policies, procedures, and work processes; works towards consistent process improvement

  • Collaborates across applicable regional MI matrix team(s) to ensure appropriate regional and local input is effectively incorporated into a product’s MI content

  • Effectively collaborates with cross-functional colleagues including Medical Communications Excellence, Scientific Publications, MA Operational Excellence, Scientific Content and Insights, Commercial, Regulatory, Pharmacovigilance, Corporate Library

Medical Governance

  • Demonstrates expertise of all relevant Astellas and alliance and/or vendor (if applicable) SOPs

  • Maintains high quality standards for MA and ensures compliance and transparency within all relevant processes and procedures

  • Proactively identifies the need for process improvements; Collaborates with Medical Information Excellence and Medical Affairs Operations to create/modify/improve current practices as identified in partnership with the Associate Director and Executive Director, Medical Information

  • Accountable for meeting budget objectives, assisting in project goals and department priorities

Quantitative Dimensions:

  • This position provides global MI support through the development of MI content for use to respond to MI inquiries (100K+/year) and through addressing escalations of complex/challenging queries for assigned products (up to 25% of total queries)

  • Responsibility includes content for assigned products (2-3 global products) as well as assigned regional/local products (up to 400 new documents per year, and maintenance of up to 300-500 documents per year)

  • Participate on 1-3 matrix teams

  • Management of output of 1-2 vendors

  • Impacts global customer service and the development and dissemination of MI content provided to external customers. 800+ internal stakeholders will have access to the global MI system and its content.

Organizational Context:

  • Reports to the Executive Director, Medical Information

  • Works in close matrix structure with and supports the Associate Director Medical Information for assigned product(s)

  • Participates in global matrix teams such as integrated Medical Communication Product Teams and Core Medical Teams, as applicable

  • Collaborates with groups inside Astellas (MA Global, MA in regions and affiliates, Development, Legal, Compliance, etc.) and outside Astellas (external vendors) to ensure MI is developed and disseminated appropriately

  • The Senior Manager works on 2-3 products depending on product life cycle/complexity

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Pharmacist (PharmD) or equivalent Advanced Scientific Degree (such as PhD or MD) with at least 3 years Pharmaceutical Industry experience including at least 1-2 years of drug/MI experience.

  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of legal/regulatory/compliance/pharmaceutical requirements and guidelines with respect to medical affairs and MI in the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Applies comprehensive technical skills to review/understand complex scientific/pharmaceutical and medical data from clinical and non-clinical trials and summarizes content in both written and verbal forms according to medical/pharmaceutical criteria.

  • Demonstrates strong communication skills, including medical/scientific written and verbal communications. Required skills include writing, reviewing and editing communications using clinical/scientific expertise

  • Has comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology and applicable company products

  • Has excellent presentation and training skills

  • Manages multiple projects with a high level of efficiency

  • Fluent in written and verbal business English

Preferred:

  • Experience working in a global pharmaceutical industry environment.

  • Matrix management experience preferred.

  • Experience within Therapeutic Area.
