Purpose & Scope:

The Sr. Manager, MA Learning is responsible to identify and address learning needs for Medical Affairs processes and operating models. The incumbent is also accountable for contributing to establishing and maintaining a culture which promotes excitement for lifelong learning across the Medical Affairs community, starting with the maintenance of an effective onboarding program to drive consistency in understanding of the Medical Affairs vision and associated practices. In alignment with the MA training Strategy and by employing matrix leadership skills, the Sr. Manager, MA Learning leads the development, execution and implementation of training activities for the Medical Affairs (MA) community, through collaborative partnerships with process owners, including regional/divisional & affiliate stakeholders and cross-functional partners (e.g. Development, E&C).

This individual ensures that Medical Affairs colleagues maintain professional growth by prioritizing and managing curriculum design, content development and execution and through alignment and collaboration with MA Senior Leaders, Line Managers and Functional Leaders, to enable successful delivery of MA training programs. This includes establishing and maintaining oversight of training activities, by providing input to and leveraging the global MA specific curriculum for global standards and procedures.

The incumbent utilizes effective planning tools and ensures all training development and compliance standards are maintained. He/she identifies and drives training innovation, through best-in-class methodology and technology, considering adult education principles, to lead training for a Medical Affairs community and its key partners/stakeholders.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Creates and fosters a spirit of cooperation within Medical Affairs and among other Astellas stakeholders to:

  • Proactively identify opportunities to enhance the Medical Affairs training curricula and improve standards for development and implementation of training solutions

  • Identify training requirements that are needed to support business processes and initiatives; address training gaps that are identified

  • Ensure Medical Affairs colleagues, globally, are trained on Astellas processes, as appropriate

  • Strong and effective strategic thinker and problem solver with high degree of emotional intelligence, with the ability to both recognize and anticipate problems. Possesses the ability to identify and solve tactical issues involving training across varied regions/divisions. Possesses the ability to translate solutions into viable action plans at a global level that are effectively disseminated and implemented throughout the MA function.

  • Establishes standards/innovation in learning and training that are current and progressive with industry methodologies: defines, implements and supports the most effective professional development practices by staying aware of, understanding the implications and setting trends for instructional practice, technology, instructional models; demonstrate understanding of relevant educational issues and design/implement solutions to address

  • Contributes to annual budget planning for training within Operational Excellence

  • Collaborates with Process Owners, Process Excellence Experts and other stakeholders to support change management for process improvement initiatives and ensure quality procedure updates and operating model enhancements are incorporated and kept current within training programs/ materials.

  • Measure and report on the effectiveness of training solutions and monitor, based on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Leads MA Training Needs Assessments, Strategy, Design and Implementation :

  • Evaluate all products, including new and innovative methods (using adult education principles) to determine appropriateness for MA learning environment. Deploy, as appropriate.

  • Work with the MA Training Head and other members of the training team to assess training needs and resources, to enable overall training strategy for Medical Affairs.

  • Proactively identify opportunities to enhance current and new training curricula; establishing training designs on curricula to meet agreed standards.

  • Establish and maintain on-boarding and professional growth curricula, including development training, to drive the success of the MA learning and development program -- (i.e. manage training vendor assessment (including costs), selection and oversight, when needed, to ensure optimal supervision towards development of training programs and materials that achieve training goals)

Technology & Reporting :

  • Leads the effort to assess, recommend and implement new instructional technologies to drive successful training programs (real time and virtual) globally

  • Collaborates with System Owners to assess, recommend and implement new training technologies, and assists in the creation, identification and tracking of audit reports to identify compliance discrepancies for assigned projects.

  • Collaborate with LMS administrators and colleagues from the Metrics & Analytics Group to define LMS reporting requirements for assigned projects and monitor and communicate training effectiveness

Quantitative Dimensions:

  • Responsible for leading the design, development, implementation and maintenance of robust training programs for 4-6 new or enhanced procedures/operating models impacting MA, including relevant Development, PV, E&C or Commercial-owned processes.

  • Works cross-functionally with other Astellas groups to customize multiple training deliverables to meet the needs of Medical Affairs.

  • May manage at least 1 direct report, but often responsible for leading matrix teams or vendors to design and implement training for Medical Affairs.

  • Responsible for vendor management, including associated budget related to MA training, development and delivery.

Organizational Context:

  • The position reports to the Director Medical Affairs Training, who leads the MA Training Function

  • Provides leadership for MA Learning Design and Development, collaborating with other functions, to customize training deliverables that address gaps or improvements needed for the MA Onboarding Program and MA procedures/operating models

  • Interfaces with members of the Insights & Training and HR functions to address product and capability learning needs for Medical Affairs.

Qualifications: Required

  • Bachelor's Degree with 5+ years' experience leading training initiatives within the health care or other regulated industry

  • 5+ years presentation, training and teaching skills experience

  • 5+ years' experience in strategic planning, execution and adult training and education

  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and proven utilization of training build and delivered utilizing adult learning principles within an LMS environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities

  • Demonstrated high level of competence with MS Office applications and training development software and tools (Articulate). Ability to learn new systems and software rapidly -- strong IT skillset.

  • Excellence collaboration and communication skills to facilitate team discussions and drive optimal team performance.

  • Demonstrated leadership in a matrix organization

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills (verbal and written)

Qualifications: Preferred

  • Demonstrated proficiency in identifying and maintaining and monitoring an LMS / training system, databases to meet changing technology, business and regulatory environment. Knowledge of LMS system functionality, interactive training tools and Software to design and execute eLearnings and videos

  • People management experience

  • Proficiency in managing multiple, complex projects
