Purpose & Scope:

Responsible for the overall leadership, strategic direction and execution of Medical Education in Medical Affairs (MA), globally. This role provides strategic leadership and manages the Medical Education team, who works closely with cross-functional leaders to ensure that Medical Education strategy and activities are aligned with iGBPs and CMPs and meet the needs of the scientific and medical community to improve patient care. Drives strategic roadmap for Medical Education, in line with industry trends/best practice, as needed; and implements practices to elicit operating at the highest ethical standards, within Astellas. Brings deep thought leadership, subject matter expertise and industry insights to achieve improvements in knowledge, effectiveness, efficiency, consistency and quality of educational programs. Establishes and maintains strong relationships with Therapy Area colleagues to identify and leverage expertise and medical education activities to improve patient care.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Leads and implements 3-5 year strategic roadmap for Medical Education in MA, ensuring that Astellas is industry-leading in Medical Education and maintains the highest ethical standards

  • In partnership with Ethics and Compliance and Commercial, works collaboratively to ensure development of quality, evidence-based, medical education activities.

  • Responsible for establishing GPST- and CMT-aligned educational strategy for priority products including ensuring that all MA Astellas educational activities, which includes Symposia, Congress Summary Meetings and Sponsorship for Education, are strategically aligned and prioritized accordingly.

  • Responsible for the development and implementation of CMT-aligned centralized symposia material, in collaboration with cross-functional matrix teams, to be used across MA Astellas (company-controlled medical educational programs at which product and/or scientific, disease state information is presented to Healthcare Professionals [HCPs])

  • Oversight of content development and analysis of educational impact/outcome assessment for applicable TA/products to ensure insights are utilized to drive educational strategy and identify future initiatives.

  • Provides strategic direction, including design and implementation of standards, procedures and tools to ensure consistent and high-quality MA Astellas medical education plans and activities.

  • Business Process Owner for Quality Documents associated with Medical Education, including Symposium, Congress Summary, and Sponsorship for Education SOPs

  • Oversee content for aggregated Med Ed report (eg, Symposia, Congress Summaries, and Sponsorship for Education)

  • Collaborates with Digital Excellence team to innovate MA Astellas educational activities; ensures deliverables and processes comply with Astellas' SOPs.

  • Keeps up-to-date knowledge of industry standards and practices; and keep abreast of and proactively respond to trends and/or shifts in the external environment, to maximize impact of Medical Education activities

  • Drive the integration of industry best practices for Medical Education activities, to address the changing external environment and internal business needs

  • Drives comprehensive, compliant MA Astellas medical education programs that build knowledge and trust with health care professionals and demonstrates commitment to patients

  • Builds and maintains effective strategic relationships and influence across Medical Affairs Leadership and other relevant global and regional stakeholders to effectively collaborate on the development of strategic needs for Medical Education

  • Represents Astellas at global forums, conferences, and professional associations on Medical Education to contribute to shaping future industry best practices

  • MA member of cross-functional Medical Educational Advisory Committee together with E&C and Commercial. Committee is aimed to provide direction/decisions on complex educational activities in alignment with Astellas processes/code/regulations.

  • Leads, develops, mentors the Medical Education team to achieve corporate and departmental objectives, fostering environment of collaboration, trust, high productivity, and consistent feedback.

Quantitative Dimensions:

Lead Medical Education team to support successful planning and execution of all MA educational activities, including symposia and congress summary meetings (5-5.5M USD/ FY)

Organizational Context:

  • The position has 3 direct reports at level Associate Directors of Medical Education

  • Key stakeholders include VPs, Executive Directors of MA Groups and strong collaboration with Core Medical Team Leads and members. This position will have impact for many MA colleagues through providing subject matter expertise, representing Astellas in external professional societies and establishing/maintaining effective organization relationships.

  • MA member of cross-function Medical Educational Advisory Committee

  • Collaboration with Ethics & Compliance and Legal Medical Education meets the highest ethical standards

  • This position is both internal and external facing.

Qualifications: Required

  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in Medical Affairs Medical Education strategies and programs (CME/ company-directed education)

  • Minimum 15 years scientific/medical experience in global pharmaceutical industry environment

  • Advanced Degree in a health-related science

  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of legal/regulatory/compliance/pharmaceutical requirements and guidelines with respect to applicable Medical Affairs functions in the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Expertise in establishing cross-regional/functional standards in alignment with regulations, codes and industry standards which impact and influence multiple departments and levels of management

  • Demonstrates the ability to review/understand complex scientific and medical data from clinical and non-clinical trials.

  • Demonstrates business acumen

  • Proven leader with ability to influence and build strong relationships cross functionally, at senior levels of the organization, and with external stakeholders in leadership positions

  • Proven team/project management skills, including global/regional matrix leadership

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities

  • Strong problem-solving skills, strategic capabilities, planning and organization skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills in English, with an ability to interact at all levels of personnel

  • Manages multiple projects with a high level of efficiency
