Astellas is announcing a Medical Coding Manager opportunity in Northbrook, IL. Purpose & Scope: The Medical Coding Manager will be a clinical expert within Advanced Informatics and Analytics (AIA) who provides expertise in using the accurate medical codes when identifying patients with certain conditions/treatments or to identify desired outcomes in each database used by AIA. The Medical Coder will provide support to every project delivered by AIA, ranging from clinical trial feasibility, in-line and pipeline commercial decisions, feasibility projects, synopsis and protocol development for publications of studies using real-world databases (e.g.EMR, claims, etc.) across Astellas' entire value chain, geographic footprint and therapeutic areas. The work of the Medical Coding Manager will be an integral part of the AIA mission and requires expertise in patient care in clinical settings, medical coding practice, real world dataset layouts and content, as well as ability to quickly run queries typically via SQL for exploration of codes in the available datasets. The Medical Coder will work closely with AIA liaisons and analysts to obtain appropriate drug, disease, and procedure codes to build a standard inhouse repository. Essential Job Responsibilities: * Provide scientific and clinically meaningful support to all efforts which leverage Real World Data in supporting key business decisions across all functional users, including medical, internal business/commercial, clinical development, safety and others. * Be an in-house resource for Medical coding knowledge, including ICD9/10 Diagnosis and Procedure codes, CPT, SNOMED, LOINC, NDC, MEDRA and Read Codes. * Work with Medical Coding Sr. Manager, AIA Liaisons, Methodologists and Analysts to ensure that appropriate codes are used to define conditions and treatments and identify key variables used in the analyses. * Assist in the development of accurate medical code definitions for synopsis and protocol development of HEOR retrospective studies, pharmacovigilance studies, regulatory affairs studies, clinical trial feasibility analyses, business development analyses and market size estimations for new indications. * Preform quality control on prepared medical code definitions as part of peer review process. * With support of Sr. Manager, participate in bridging communications between AIA, Marketing Strategy, PPS, DDR, M&D, HEOR and PV to ensure appropriate clinical context is conveyed. Quantitative Dimensions: The Medical Coding Manager is responsible for collaborating with internal and external stakeholders across multiple products and therapeutic areas to provide medical code expertise. They are expected to support multiple large and small projects across all therapeutic areas and functions within Astellas -- to execute AIA projects. Projects will be defined as, but not limited to, unique hypotheses explored within external databases, publications or internal business analytics, simulated and/or real-world applications. Organizational Context: The Medical Coding Manager reports to the AIA Medical Coding Sr. Manager. The person will have multiple cross-collaborative project teams and matrix responsibilities across the AIA division globally. The person primarily collaborates with the following colleagues: * AIA Liaisons * AIA Analysts * AIA Methodologists Qualifications: Required * Bachelor's degree in nursing or a medically related field, or equivalent experience * 1-2 years of hands on experience working with Administrative Claims and EMR/EHR data * Excellent oral and written communication skills * Excellent listening and comprehension skills * Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively and work efficiently with people at all levels in an organization. * Excellent organizational and time-management skills * Ability to work effectively in a matrix setting to resolve issues and achieve common goals * Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) Preferred * 1-2 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry * Health Information Management degree or Medical Coding certifications - certification or eligibility for certification from either the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). * Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) * Master's degree in public health, nursing, or other health-related science * Experience supporting healthcare analytics using data such as administrative insurance claims database and/or EMR databases (e.g., IBM-Truven, Optum, IQVIA, Humedica, Symphony Health, Flatiron, etc.) * Knowledge of different coding systems used across the world in healthcare -- ICD9/10, CPT, HCPCS, SNOMED, Readcodes (UK), standard disease code (JP), NDC, ATC, etc. * Preferable knowledge with SQL or related programming languages; or willingness to learn * Preferable knowledge of online medical code repositories like encoderPRO, OHDSI or equivalent tools *LI-CH1 Equal Opportunity Employer Minorities/Women/Protected Veterans/Disabled Category Advanced Informatics & Analytics
