Purpose and Scope:
The Executive Director Operations, Insights & Data Intelligence is responsible for providing global strategic leadership to deliver integrated operational planning information to support business operations decision-making through collaborative partnerships with cross-functional stakeholders to enable M&D to identify, prioritize and execute projects that increase and accelerate efficiencies, and reduce redundancy.
This position will provide leadership in delivery and application of industry insights and benchmarking information for Medical & Development divisions to supports effective prioritization of project activities and optimize the deployment of available resources to ensure M&D delivers in line with the CSP.
This position will also be responsible for providing vision, leadership and strategic direction for the development and maintenance of excellence in project and product portfolio analytics and reporting globally to ensure operational information is available for decision making at all levels. The position will be accountable for ensuring best in practice information management, reporting and analytics tools are developed and maintained as the business needs evolve.
The position will also be responsible for delivering standard reporting for project teams, functions and governance and delivery of portfolio budget reporting and other reports.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
Providing strategic oversight to the evaluation and implementation of standards for excellence in information management; resource management and analytics and reporting.
Oversees measurement and publication of KPIs evaluating the health of the M&D business across all divisions and compounds. Shares analyses and recommendations on program effectiveness and actions to leadership
Manage forecasting model & process, including creation of end-to-end strategic forecasting platform, data automation, predictive analytics, risk/sensitivity analysis to improve transparency, strategic decision making and process efficiency
Develop and manage innovative analytical methodologies, data and technologies, ensuring that Astellas is at the forefront of Medical & Development Insight practices for portfolio planning, resource management, data management, analytics and forecast development
Enhance global Advanced Analytics capability to serve the needs of project teams to support strategic and tactical investment decisions, including digital analytics, mix modelling and ROI analyses.
Enabling the business to effectively and consistently utilize operational information to fulfil their needs and enable further downstream output uses and analytics, including implementation of operational efficiencies and forward-looking analyses for continual improvement at all levels.
Ensuring accurate, current timelines schedules, cost and resource models and support functional leadership and Finance by leveraging data to inform needed model changes and partner with project teams/Finance to ensure timeline, cost and resource estimations for approved scenarios/changes are reflected accurately and timely in the enterprise-system.
Providing strategic oversight of the cross-industry collaborations related to reporting of benchmarking data, such as CMR or Metrics Champion Consortium, both externally and internally.
Assesses/anticipates the industry environment to identify changes such as new guidance documents, standards and regulations that impact information management and provides leadership for appropriate implementation strategies within Astellas.
Leads and participates in industry working groups to represent Astellas and contribute to the development of best practices for insights generation, analytics and reporting.
Lead team at the cutting edge of technology to learn new tools and techniques for storing, accessing and analyzing information, incorporate leading edge approaches into value-added strategies and operations for Astellas.
Quantitative Dimensions:
Responsible for creating an environment which improves productivity and maximizes efficiency of project and portfolio analytics and reporting. The role would lead the evaluation of operational data including approximately 200 projects, 600 clinical studies, fiscal year expenses of > $1 billion oku Yen and approximately 2500 headcount in a given 5-year window.
Responsible for overseeing the execution and maintenance of excellence in reporting and analytics, with the right data at the right time to answer the right question.
Responsible for budget and timelines associated with assigned initiatives.

The position reports to the SVP M&D Strategy & Operations
The Executive Director Operations, Insights & Data Intelligence may have 3-5 direct reports and an extended team of 20+ including contractors
Global role managing team member in multiple geographies
Peer group: Collaborative partnerships with peers in MDSO (e.g., Exec Dir Digital Excellence & Data Strategy, Exec Dir Communications & Change Management, Exec Dir Knowledge Management & Exec Dir Strategic Planning & Administration) as well as Divisional and Functional Leaders in M&D, AIA Technology, Governance & Informatics Lead and Head of Commercial Insights
Qualifications:
Required
Minimum 15 years in the pharmaceutical industry focused on R&D or clinical operations, with minimum 7 years in the drug development setting.
Expertise in use of enterprise-wide data warehousing options/opportunities and reporting tools/systems, as a business user or technical/IT user, to facilitate and support the analytical and reporting capabilities for operational data.
Expertise in business processes and procedures in clinical drug development, including portfolio, planning, clinical trial management, cost, staffing, resource management and/or time tracking areas.
Strong knowledge of tools used by pharmaceutical industry to support collection of business operations data, such as CTMS, SAP, etc.
Minimum 8 years’ experience in establishing and/or implementing reporting standards in support of cross-functional business operations, particularly operational performance metrics in clinical development.
Demonstrated ability to present complex issues and contribute to high level presentations and discussions for executive leadership.
Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective collaborative relationships across divisions, geographies, top management and other stakeholders’ partners (both internal and external).
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Proven track record of success being a high-level team contributor.
Ability to see and communicate the vision, understand the strategy and align tactics to the strategy.
Strong and effective strategic thinker and problem solver with high degree of emotional intelligence, with the ability to both recognize and anticipate problems.
Possesses the ability to translate solutions into viable action plans at a global level that are effectively communicated and implemented through cooperation of stakeholders.
Past experience managing global change, managing projects and influencing across multiple geographies (e.g., US, Europe and Japan) and functions.
