Astellas is announcing a Director, Commercial Strategy Lead for Digital Health program, Commercial Group, Rx+ Business Accelerator opportunity.

Purpose & Scope of Position:

  • Rx+ Business Accelerator develops non-drug novel medical solutions aiming to generate independent revenue from such new business . Establishing Rx+ Business is one of four strategic goals of Astellas’ corporate mid-term plan (MTP2021).

  • Rx+ business is defined as a business that leverages the expertise and knowledge of Astellas, which have been cultivated through its Rx business, integrates innovative medical technology with cutting-edge technology in different fields, contributes to patients through Patient Journey (overall medical care, including diagnostic, preventive, therapeutic and prognostic care) and creates new revenue streams separate from our core Rx products.

  • Establishing Rx+ business requires establishing new business model differently from pharma business as well as collaboration with external partners in other industries.

  • Commercial Group of Rx+ Business Accelerator is responsible for providing commercial input and support for Rx+ programs, including crafting the commercial strategy as well as rolling and cyclic testing to confirm business feasibility for the new endeavor, primarily digital health or digital device programs.

  • Director is responsible for strategic planning toward commercialization, seeking potential partners and leading business partnership negotiations to realize the commercialization strategy globally of the assigned Rx+ program, primarily digital health or digital device programs .

  • This position requires a higher level of commitment of co-leading with the program lead in strategy planning bringing insights of evolving healthcare industry. This position also requires handling a complex collaboration structure, internally and externally, and strong accountability to co-lead novel challenges in a multi-national company.

  • When working on the assigned programs, this position takes a role like a chief commercial officer or chief business officer of an early-stage startup company to establish global business.

  • This position is expected to drive enhancing capability of global and regional Rx+ commercial function and team and to developing effective organization beyond the assigned program.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • This position is responsible for leading strategic planning toward commercialization including marketing, commercial development, market intelligence and field test marketing /pilot launch trial for business concepts, and execution of business partnership development for value maximization of assigned Rx+ business from research stage though launch as a Rx+ global commercial /business leader which belongs to Rx+ BA, Astellas Pharma Inc in global or multiple areas.

  • This position develops commercial strategy and effective partnership development including effective framework for business and value maximization plan with assigned Rx+ business in global or multiple areas by close collaboration with Rx+ program lead, other Rx+ functions’ heads, Rx+ Development head, and others in Rx+ BA, and relevant internal stakeholders including pharma Commercial, pharma Development, Discovery Drug Research (DDR), and any others in Astellas.

  • This position also requires to support assigned functional management based on the direction of Commercial head to drive the strategic commercial initiatives including marketing, commercial development, market intelligence and field test marketing /pilot launch trial for business concepts, and partnership development by close collaboration with Rx+ program lead, Strategic Management Group (SMG), New Business Development (NBO) Group, Rx+ Development head and others in Rx+ BA, and relevant internal stakeholders including Rx Commercial, Rx Development, Discovery Drug Research (DDR) and others in Astellas.

  • This position develops novel business models through the external commercial /business partnership collaboration for ensuring effective business framework on individual and cross /multiple Rx+ programs in global or multiple areas

  • This position develops and leads effective strategy with assigned Rx+ program in global or multiple areas for Rx+ commercialization including marketing, commercial development and market intelligence, and business development based on Rx+ BA directions and missions.

  • This position collaborates with relevant BP for value maximization of each Business Acceleration Programs (BAP) in Rx+ business and develops effective business models and commercial strategy with cross-BAP and shared programs.



  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • 15 or more years’ experience in healthcare industry with leading roles in global business assessment, commercial development, marketing or partnering /business development

  • 3 or more years’ experience in business negotiation with Business to Business external partners.

  • Direct experience in managing relatively large-scale projects, including M&A, development project, commercial development, new modality project etc.

  • Broad business experience gained in a variety of functions including research, development, manufacturing, finance, business planning, marketing or corporate function

  • Strong business negotiation skills ability to onboard new partners or vendors.

  • Knowledge/experience of running financial models and elaborate the outcome in a concise and effective manner.

  • Ability to create key terms for partnership and handle contractual documents

  • Global communication skills with multi-functional /regional /cultural members

  • Lead skills of team activities with multi-functional /regional /cultural members

  • Excellent presentation /recommendation skills for decision making of the top managements

  • Ability to quickly develop credibility as a thought-partner with senior management

  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA or masters in the fields relevant to Rx+ programs

  • Prior experience leading global business assessment, commercial development, marketing and partnering /business development in the field of intersection of healthcare industry and digital, device, diagnosis or data

  • Extensive knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry as well as digital /device/diagnosis company

  • Understanding of latest trends in the digital and healthcare market

  • Strong preference in experience in digital health startups in the field

Salary Range

  • $173,300 – $231,000 (NOTE: Final salary could be more or less, commensurate with experience)
