Purpose & Scope
The Lead Strategic Functions and Methodology is accountable for oversight and leadership of an advanced analytics team responsible for producing robust solutions from complex and high-dimensional internal datasets using state-of-the-art data mining, simulation and modeling techniques. The lead will oversee efforts and resources for large and/or complex projects, interact with cross-functional/cross-division teams, and be accountable for the analytical soundness of all project plans, output and deliverables for the assigned projects. Projects will span across all therapeutic areas, functions and geographies. This position requires proficiency in effective leadership as well as people and project management skills. Specifically, this individual will:
ensure that advanced analytics solution development projects are statistically valid and appropriately planned, resourced and executed;
establish effective communication with key internal stakeholders to understand and support the analytical and statistical needs of the business;
manage collaborations and lead statistical analysis, operations research and management science across multiple divisions to ensure that projects are relevant, actionable, and informative for business decision-making
establish effective communication with analysts across the business to ensure statistically valid and high-quality analytics are being provided.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Support the Astellas business by leading a team that provides methodology support across approved projects, especially in support of the corporate strategic plan directions for value creation
Develop a high performing team of analysts and statisticians through hiring and/or development of in-house talent as required by the business needs
Provide statistical/analytical oversight of the Strategic Functions and Methodology team's projects
Lead, prioritize, and/or contribute to multiple internal data initiatives, including but not limited to: new tool development, automation and machine learning, NLP, simulation, data integration, vizualization and informatics dashboards
Act as a project leader for projects assigned to the Strategic Functions and Methodology team and interact closely with other data science teams and the business owner during the execution of projects
Develop data mining and/or data modeling plans to support projects
Contribute to and/or lead the design, assessment and interpretation of internal data projects in a statistically relevant context to support business data needs
Ensure quality and consistency of complex analytics deliverables by developing robust processes and capabilities specific to internal company data projects
Ensure that statistical analyses are performed in accordance with good statistical practice and applicable regulatory guidelines
Quantify the business process by statistics and management science to increase business decision quality
Identify and manage collaborations across multiple internal data owners
Ensure team members have a robust understanding of advanced analytics methodologies and contribute to predictive modeling standards, data analyses techniques and model management
Build strategic statistics collaborations with Astellas Global/regional colleagues and external partners to advance business objectives as appropriate
Serve on or lead internal committees within Astellas as appropriate
Quantitative Dimensions
The Lead Strategic Functions and Methodology provides predictive analytics, model selection, and other forms of advanced statistical analyses. These deliverables will frequently be contained within business informatics tools which the business owners can directly access and, in some cases, refresh on a routine basis. They are responsible for collaborating with internal and external stakeholders across multiple products and therapeutic areas to provide statistical expertise, assessment and management. The results produced by the Strategic Functions and Methodology team members must be reproducible and statistically sound, and are subject to internal inspections.
The Director will oversee this work with minimal supervision, but reporting into the Head of Advanced Analytics.
Organizational Context
The Lead Strategic Functions and Methodology reports to the Senior Director, Head of Advanced Analytics with at least four (4) individual contributors as direct reports. They will collaborate closely with multiple project teams across all AIA initiatives and priority areas. The Director will collaborate across Astellas divisions including the following colleagues:

Manufacturing and Supply Chain
External: Astellas partners, Vendors, Key Opinion Leaders
Qualifications:
Required
PhD. in Statistics or other quantitative fields like Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science (requires minimum 10 years' experience)
Minimum of 8 years' experience in applying statistical/quantitative methods in biomedical research, extensive applied data mining and modeling experience
Experience in working on project teams and managing projects and/or people within a matrix environment
Experience with multivariate modeling and underlying data assumptions
Expertise in linear and non-linear regression modeling, data mining and machine learning techniques. Special emphasis on classification and segmentation methods
Data modeling experience using SQL, R, SAS, Python or other statistical programming languages
Proven ability to rationalize disparate data sources and the ability to intuit the large picture within a dataset.
Advanced meta-analysis capabilities
Excellent organizational, people, project and time management skills
Solid oral, written, and presentation communication skills (e.g. able to clearly communicate statistical and epidemiological issues and methods to statisticians and non-statisticians)
Preferred
At least 2 years direct or indirect people management experience
Solid knowledge of data mining tools such as R, Python, SAS as well as proficiency in SQL
Expertise in text-mining, data preparation and processing for such projects
