Purpose and Scope:

This individual will be responsible for providing practical, timely and high-quality services to insure integrity and effectiveness of the Company's risk management and insurance program. Responsible for identifying issues, analyzing possible risk management solutions, and recommending options to address critical issues and minimize potential exposure and risk so that business objectives are met.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage global non-benefits insurance program, including development of risk management strategic objectives, design and execution of annual renewals, development of risk control initiatives, analysis of new business operations, preparation and execution of renewal strategies, and collaboration with parent and affiliates on insurance procurement issues

  • Develop innovative, strategic and cost-effective solutions to risk-related issues facing the company, including novel loss control measures, newly created/designed types of insurance or risk transfer methods and alternative program structures

  • Manage conceptual and operational responsibility for captive management, including facilitation of governance. This includes performing utilization reviews and domicile analyses to strategically assess opportunities to include additional exposures, maximize financial benefits and increase operational efficiencies.

  • Work closely with Finance, the affiliates and other relevant business functions to maintain all exposure data, including tracking property and inventory values, sales, payroll and fleet

  • Develop strategies to improve processes and procedures through automation or streamlining

  • Independently manage Clinical Research Insurance program globally including but not limited to management of outsourced processing unit, oversight of captive, interaction with internal clients, and maintenance of documentation in the Records Management System, ensuring that documentation is available for internal and external regulatory audits.

  • Lead the management of Clinical Trials claims globally, including partnering with Global Litigation (Legal) and Clinical Development on global standards and ensuring that Astellas' legal interests are sufficiently protected

  • Responsible for managing relationships with brokers, insurance carriers, and outsourced service providers, ensuring expectations are effectively communicated and executed, all parties understand the Company's financial and strategic objectives, future exposures are identified, and insurance options identified, and operational efficiencies are maximized

  • Assess Mergers and Acquisitions, as it relates to insurance and claims, ensuring that Astellas' assets are protected and that newly acquired entities are appropriately onboarded

  • Partner with global business units to provide contractual risk review (suppliers, customers, events, leases, acquisitions and divestitures, etc.), appropriate insurance specifications, indemnification wording and risk transfer to help guide in decision making processes.

  • Act as subject matter expert to various business functions regionally and globally on insurance related topics including but not limited to new risk exposures, strategic business changes, and local insurance matters.

  • Lead U.S. Workers Compensation program and claims; develop and implement programs to improve workplace safety

  • Lead the management of global Marine Cargo claims, including partnering with global Logistics to ensure required documentation is comprehensive and reported timely, thereby ensuring maximum recoveries

  • Assist with the Company's Business Continuity program, as needed

  • Provide timely claim reporting and notification to carriers; track claim status

  • Manage global claims and assist litigation where insurance carrier is defending the Company

  • Manage the Risk and Insurance Management Information System (RMIS)

  • Manage Insurance Risk Management budget process and track related expenses

  • Analyze data and prepare various Risk Management reports, updates, and recommendations; make strategic recommendations based on the same

  • Promulgate information on insurance program, including Risk Management Intranet site, and address insurance-related questions raised by various business units

  • Monitor and evaluate regulatory, economic, industry and market trends and their impact on standard insurance coverages; keep management informed of any issues impacting the Company's insurance coverages

  • Manage Senior Manager Risk & Insurance Management

Quantitative Dimensions:

Responsible for operating within the department's budget, and any applicable project specific budgets. Responsible for cost-effectively managing the Company's global insurance program, including Clinical Research Insurance Program. Responsible for running the Company's workers' compensation program. Responsible for developing and implementing process improvements to the Company's risk management function

Organizational Context

This position is part of the Corporate Risk Management division and reports to the Head of Risk Management. The incumbent is managing one FTE: Senior Manager Risk & Insurance Management.

Qualifications Required

  • BA/BS in Business, Risk Management, General Insurance or Finance

  • Minimum of 10 years related experience, 5 of those related experience in insurance management

  • Experience in leading a globally operating insurance management function

  • Good understanding of global corporate insurance programs as well as global insurance broker/carrier relationships

  • Experience in managing global clinical trial insurance programs

  • Strong negotiation, oral and written communication, presentation, training, organizational, and teamwork skills

  • Self-motivated, innovative, strategic, detail-oriented and able to provide high quality and timely work product

  • Able to manage multiple projects and work successfully in a fast-paced environment under time deadlines

  • Works independently with minimal supervision

  • Ability to effectively interact with global headquarters in Japan, with European headquarters and affiliate entities in several regions; understands the Company's global structure

  • Knowledge of the pharmaceutical and life sciences industry and the risks faced by it.

  • Overnight travel as needed (minimal travel anticipated)

Qualifications Preferred

  • Risk Management Certification

  • Professional certification in Business Continuity Management

  • Experience in managing captive insurance programs

  • Experience in Risk Management Information System implementation and customization
