Purpose & Scope:

This position provides financial leadership and decision support services for the senior leaders of Astellas' Development organization and their teams. It is expected to influence its partners' choices and priorities, establishing a climate of financial stewardship and championing value creation. Most of this job's effort is focused on the resources of the Development project portfolio, but it is expected to support the effective management of overall Development resources. This role also provides thought and project leadership for R&D Finance initiatives to improve financial management.

This position has core responsibilities for financial planning, financial reporting and analysis of Development's clinical development expenses. It directs the work of the Development Finance team supporting the Oncology Therapeutic Area to meet its primary partners' needs and meet financial process and reporting obligations associated with the overall R&D Finance team.

This position's primary partners are the Therapeutic Area Heads (TAH), Global Development Project Leaders (GDPL), Core Teams, and the VP of Development Finance.

This position works in concert with the Astellas External Reporting Tax & Treasury (ERT&T) team and R&D Financial Services and Projects team, providing accurate and timely information needed for statutory reporting and budgeting, tax compliance, and ensuring compliance with applicable Astellas policies and guidelines by the Medical & Development staff. These activities include managing important supplier agreements and providing analysis and support for Development's co-development agreements.

This role is a senior Finance leader at Astellas. It will manage Finance team members and coordinate with global Finance leaders to optimize the team's overall service delivery and share best practices. It plays an important role in executing global Finance strategies and attracting and developing a high performing staff. This role supports the objectives of the Vice President, Development Finance and the Development organization.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Provides senior level financial and business advice to stakeholders through effective partnerships, useful analyses, and by constructively challenging proposals so Astellas can meet its overall goals effectively.

  2. Provides key stakeholders with accurate, timely financial information to support decision making, and enabling compliance with policies, regulations, and laws.

  3. Evaluates investment proposals and formulation of recommendations for management to maximize return on investment

  4. Directs key business initiatives, identifying opportunities to streamline processes and procedures within his/her remit, driving approved initiatives to completion

  5. Acts as a catalyst in driving initiatives to deliver the strategy and results

  6. Articulates financial risks and opportunities and drive post-investment appraisal of business initiatives within his/ her remit

  7. Responsible for implementing the planning processes within the remit of the role, in alignment with the global process

  8. Leads the budgeting process across his/her remit, including target setting, challenging the relevant leads, and ensuring realistic budgets

  9. Drives the forecasting process, ensuring that results are reasonably predictive, and effectively highlight risks and opportunities, allowing the business to create value through adjustments and reallocations of investments

  10. Supports effective business performance management, including working with the Finance Business Partnering teams to set appropriate (and standardised where possible) KPIs, reporting and challenging the business to improve results, grow profits and create sustainable value

  11. Leverages business knowledge and relationships to effectively support and challenge business performance and Planning, Budgeting & Forecasting.

  12. Oversees month-end close activities for Development's operations including journal entries (accruals, reclass, amortization, collaborations). Collaborates with ERT&T and shared services teams to produce timely and accurate financial accounting information.

  13. Ensure a culture of Ethics and Compliance; lead by example and incorporate cross-cultural perspectives when addressing challenging situations

  14. Leads and coaches members of the Development Finance team so work is done well and efficiently.

  15. Other such duties as may be reasonably required by the business.

Organizational Context:

Internal Stakeholders

  • This position functionally reports to the Vice President, Development Finance and partners with the local leaders of the Development Leadership Team and global Finance.

  • This position is part of the R&D Finance team that provides services to all the business units reporting to Astellas' Chief Medical Officer.

Specific Physical or Environmental Requirements:

  • Ability to operate effectively within a global environment, using remote communication, and appreciated different cultural backgrounds.

Qualifications:

Required

Minimum Qualification

  • University degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline

  • Fluency in local language, English conversational and business English (equivalent to Toefl IBT 105+, or 7.5 IELTS, CAE- Cambridge English advanced exam, TOEIC Listening 400+, Reading 400+, Speaking 150+, Writing 150+)

  • Working knowledge of internal controls, IFRS, and J-Sox.

  • Strong teamwork and partner behaviors

  • Adept with MS Office applications

Minimum Experience

  • 12 years of financial management and / or accounting experience, preferably in a multi-national, multi-currency environment

  • 4 years of recent experience as a senior financial partner to a business unit leader

  • 5 years of experience managing and coaching staff

Preferred

  • MBA/Advanced Degree with business focus

  • CPA, CA, CGMA, CMA or equivalent

  • Working knowledge of SAP, BPC, Anaplan, Hyperion

  • Knowledge about important the regulations for drug development

  • Knowledge and insight into the trend of pharmaceutical industry, business
