Purpose and Scope:
The Director US Field Medical Excellence is responsible for: (1) the strategic leadership and management of the US Field Medical Excellence team in support of US Medical Strategy and overall Astellas business objectives, (2) the primary interface to internal teams within Medical Affairs including US Medical Leadership Team (MA US LT), Field Medical Leadership Team (FMLT), Global Field Medical Excellence Forum and outside Medical Affairs including Information Systems (IS) and Commercial Operations (3) strategic input into building functional level objectives for MSL role and responsibility execution in the field that support the US medical plan, (4) business process ownership for US Medical Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system and other Field Medical based systems/technologies, (5) primary point of contact for relevant external vendors, and (6) supporting the understanding of the external environment and data gaps, translation of insights into strategies and activities, and fulfillment of information needs.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
The primary duties and responsibilities of Director Field Medical Excellence include:
Leadership of the Field Medical Excellence team governing all Operational aspects of the MSL function. Lead/coach/develop Field Medical Excellence direct reports.
Act as the primary Operational field medical interface to internal teams within and outside Medical Affairs and provide strategic and functional input into Field Based goals and objectives for MSL execution that support the medical plan and aligned customer facing activities.
Provide strategic functional and Operational vision and direction to the Field Medical Team.
Analyze and provide MSL strategic resources recommendations, define territories and geographic locations of MSLs based on data/analytics and business needs.
Serve as the Business Process owner for US Medical CRM system with associated system development lifecycle activities. Ensure US CRM system is harmonized where appropriate globally and ensure needed enhancements are implemented to support the Field Medical Team in the changing environment.
Identify, build plans and implement system and structure enhancements to improve overall organization efficiency and department function.
Represent US Field Medical voice on relevant regional and global technology/system Governance forums.
Identify, analyze, report/visualize appropriate regional and global Field Medical metrics to support department objectives.
Anticipate and identify future Field Medical training needs and collaborate with Training Team and others as appropriate to develop and implement training plans and Field Based training curriculum.
Accomplish goals within boundaries established by regulatory and legal compliance in accordance with company policies and sound ethical practices.
Provide written and verbal feedback to ensure a productive, professional and motivated work group and a highly valued work environment.
Mentor and assist in training new MSLs and MSL Managers as appropriate.
Provide leadership to the Field Medical Leadership Team with input into strategic Field Based process, development of annual corporate and department objectives.
Provides matrix leadership to US MSL National Directors (n=3), US Field Medical Leadership (n=15), US MSL team (n=60) and Global Field Medical Excellence Forum (n=6). Provides input into the Field Medical systems and functional training budget. Provides functional direction of field level activity for building field level support plans that are aligned with the US medical plan to support the science of Astellas products. Ensures the structure, function and capabilities of the MSL team evolve as necessary to continually meet the needs of external stakeholders in a changing healthcare environment. Champions operational excellence. Serves as primary point of contact (POC) with Veeva CRM external vendor, and secondary POC with Veeva Vault and other relevant Field Based system vendors.
Director US Field Medical Excellence reports to the Executive Director Medical Operations. Direct reports include Associate Director Field Medical Excellence Operations and Sr. Manager US Data & Analytics. Collaborates within Medical Affairs and with departments such as Human Resources, Ethics & Compliance, Legal, Information Systems (IS), and Commercial Operations.
Master's Degree in a health-related science
5+ years Medical Science Liaison or other relevant industry, clinical or health science research experience
3+ years' experience managing department resources
3+ years of direct management experience, preferably of MSL teams
Must be willing to travel up to 30% of the time
Proven ability to effectively communicate and negotiate through a matrix organization; effective oral communication, written communication, presentation, and coaching skills
Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Proven ability to effectively communicate scientific information
Demonstrated knowledge and administration of Field Based IT systems
Experience and solid knowledge of regulatory guidelines and changes in healthcare environment
Must be able to organize, prioritize, and work effectively in a fast-paced rapid changing environment
Doctoral degree in a health-related science (e.g. PharmD, PhD, MD/DO)
At least 4 years Medical Science Liaison experience
Experience of managing managers
Experience of understanding and applying business principles and market dynamics/insights to support business needs
Experience with Veeva CRM and Vault solutions
