Purpose & Scope:

The Decision Sciences group, part of the Chief Business Officer (CBO) organization, is responsible for leading rigorous analyses and generating strategic insights to enable investment decisions which maximize portfolio value and enable Astellas' Corporate Strategic Plan. This position will be a Global Expert in the process and analytics of decision-making at Astellas. This role involves working closely with Global Asset Teams, Portfolio Strategy, senior leaders and top management to identify strategic issues, facilitate discussion, and implement qualitative and/or quantitative analyses to inform decision-making. This role is dynamic, fast-paced, highly collaborative, and covers a broad range of R&D, new modalities and technologies, commercial, and strategic topics that are critical to our business. The candidate must have the influence and mediation skills to address and facilitate productive debate at the highest levels of the organization to improve decision outcomes, share best practices, and seek out innovative solutions to Astellas' global challenges.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Establish highly collaborative, cross-functional partnerships with Asset, Project, and Portfolio teams and other key stakeholders in order to optimize decision quality

  • Develop and apply innovative and effective analytical frameworks to drive optimal decision-making for high-value, high-complexity decisions

  • Drive identification, evaluation, and prioritization of strategic options with crisp and fit-for-purpose analyses

  • Drives measurement and simulation of decisions related to the strategic plan to best inform Corporate functions and top management

  • Support top management briefings and prepare teams for a decision to invest

  • Leads processes with Commercial Strategy & Capabilities and Portfolio Strategy to enhance decision making within the pipeline via analytics, technology, and process improvements.

  • Establish and drive collaboration with CFC, the profit centers and Corporate Planning to design and maintain a cross-functional resource assessment and allocation framework

  • Partner with enterprise analytics to improve analytic methods throughout Astellas and design decision process to account for new information and analytical methods

  • Project management of activities, and appropriately sourcing support from the Decision Science function and external parties

  • Educate and train Astellas colleagues on decision science and improving decision quality

  • Communicate insights and recommendations to senior leadership

Qualitative Dimensions:

This position will have significant impact on key stage-gate milestone decisions ($10-300 MM USD), the broad portfolio decision processes, and significant enterprise decisions (<$50MM USD).

Organizational Context:

This position reports directly to Astellas' Sr. Director Head of the Decision Sciences group and will regularly interface with VP+ level team members, including members of top management.



  • Advanced degree in business, decision analysis, medicine / science, or related quantitative field or relevant experience

  • 8+ years related experience with 3+ years in healthcare (e.g., management consulting, analytics, mediation)

  • Experience presenting and facilitating discussions with executive teams

  • Strong understanding of and expertise using cash flow modeling, economic value measures (e.g., NPV, IRR), and other types of analytical modeling (e.g., Monte Carlo simulation, decision tree analysis, multi-attribute analysis) to inform decision making. Expertise in facilitating cross-functional group decisions; Experience managing projects with and through others; Willingly shares responsibility and credit; Enthusiastically provides guidance and shares expertise with others; Earns respect and trust of the team; Proactive self-starter

  • Passion for creating new analytic and strategic process offerings that drive significant value for Astellas

  • Intellectual curiosity and creativity: thrive in developing new ideas and identifying growth opportunities

  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills and detail orientation.

  • 5+ years' experience in Portfolio Management, Decision Science, or Strategic Planning

  • Ability to facilitate and mediate across cultures
