Purpose and Scope:

Astellas is looking for an Associate Director, Thought Leader Engagement, a breakthrough therapy for patients with locally advanced/metastatic urothelial cancer. The successful candidate will be a key member of the brand team and will contribute to the development and implementation of programs to maximize the brand potential for patients and the connection with customers. This person is responsible for development of thought leader engagement strategy, peer-to-peer program execution, managing our convention presence and advisory board coordination working in close collaboration with internal and external partners, including Seattle Genetics, the sales force, brand team, agencies, vendors, thought leaders, among others.

Specific responsibilities will evolve based on the needs of the brand, LCM plans and competencies required on specific projects.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

Thought Leader Engagement

  • Identify and develop trusted relationships with National and Regional Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) in urothelial cancer.

  • Monitor KOL opinions about evolving bladder cancer disease management, synthesize key insights and translate implications for PADCEV.

  • Create engagement plans and strategically engage with KOLs to influence promotional strategies and tactics.

  • Problem solve KOL experiences and coordinate cross-functional action plans.

Peer-to-Peer Programs

  • Lead the development and execution of commercial advisory boards. Synthesize and share insights learned with cross-functional partners to inform brand strategy and tactics.

  • Develop, together with our partner and external agency, all content to be used as part of our promotional speaker bureau.

  • Identify, coach and train promotional speakers on brand content. Work with external vendors to manage speaker program execution.

  • Identify and plan additional peer-to-peer programs with potential to drive brand awareness in approved indications. Lead the development and review of related content.

Convention Presence

  • Manage the presence of the brand at all conventions including booth design, promotional messaging and staffing by our Sales/Marketing colleagues.

  • Collaborate with our Seattle Genetics alliance partner to develop a Key Customer engagement plan and coordinate the logistics/meeting schedule between customers and alliance management and key stakeholders.


  • Manage outside agencies in the following capacities: project estimate development, time management, and execution of project components including content creation, and assuring consistency with Astellas goals, direction, ethics, and guidelines.

  • Track and manage detailed budget for responsible tactics.

  • Ensure all work is completed in an ethical and compliant manner.

  • Implement other initiatives as assigned.

  • Marketing strategy, management, and execution.

  • Customer satisfaction and experience -- enabling strong, business-centric, collaborative relationships with customers, both internal and external.

  • Driving business performance through effective cross-functional team engagement and collaborative initiatives.

  • Efficient use of resources including: management of vendors, negotiation for services both internally and externally, and monitoring of budgets.

Organizational Context:

This position presents a significant opportunity to assess, recommend, and lead activities that will directly influence the short and long-term success of PADCEV. This position requires a significant level of collaboration across numerous functions and external stakeholders to be successful and will need to consistently identify ideas that lead to creative solutions. The position requires both strong strategic planning and tactical execution. This position also requires a highly motivated self-starter with exceptional communication and relationship building skills. This individual will report to the PADCEV Brand Lead, Oncology Marketing. This position will have one direct report.



  • Bachelor's degree

  • 10+ years of related, relevant experience in pharma (marketing, sales, sales training, market research, etc).

  • Deep oncology therapeutic knowledge and experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with thought leaders.

  • Demonstrated ability to be a high-level contributor or leader of a project, process or function.

  • Demonstrated ability to find creative solutions to problems or new opportunities.

  • Must possess excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills.

  • Proven ability to use analytical skills and critical thinking to diagnosis business issues and incorporate into development or adjustment of marketing plans.

  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence peers and stakeholders within and outside the organization as well as effectively lead cross-functional work teams/projects.

  • Ability to travel 50% or more if needed.


  • MBA or other related graduate level degree.

  • Pharmaceutical sales experience.

  • KOL relationships in urothelial cancer.

  • Knowledge of and recent experience in launching a new drug and/or indication.
