Purpose and Scope:

  • The Associate Director, Medical Education has oversight and drives strategic alignment of all Astellas Medical Affairs (MA) educational activities (e.g. Symposia, Congress Summary, Grants and/or Sponsorship for Education) for the applicable TA/products. As a member of the Core Medical Team (CMT), the Associate Director is the driving force for implementation of educational strategy for products (1-3 products) in either Oncology or Specialty therapeutic area. Brings deep subject matter expertise, industry insights and willingness to innovate, advancing Astellas as an industry-leader in Medical Education and maintains the highest ethical standards. Establishes and maintains strong relationships with Therapy Area colleagues to identify and leverage expertise and medical education activities to improve patient care.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning

  • Ensures deep understanding/insights of educational needs identified by affiliates/regions through CMT.

  • With these deep understanding/insights, leads cross-functional efforts to develop and maintain the educational needs assessment by Global Product Strategy Teams (GPSTs) to determine the prioritized educational needs/gaps.

  • Leads and drives MA Educational strategy for applicable products/TAs to ensure identified educational needs are met, including ensuring that all Astellas MA educational activities are strategically aligned and prioritized accordingly, in collaboration with CMT.

  • Drives integrated medical education planning across MA and ensures effective communication with cross-functional teams.

  • Global oversight of regional/affiliate-proposed MA-sponsored/directed/initiated educational activities, which includes Symposia, Congress Summary Meetings and Grants and/or Sponsorships for Education.

Content Development

  • Leads cross-functional, cross-regional teams to develop and maintain central MA symposium content in collaboration with CMTs.

  • Identifies and develops symposium best practice guidance’s and tools to accompany the use of central content by regions/affiliates

  • Manage and update symposium content in central repository tool (e.g., Veena Vault MedComms) Reporting.

  • Leads content development and analysis of educational impact/outcome assessments for applicable TA/products.

  • Leads the comprehensive strategy for synthesizing Medical Education outcomes to ensure Medical Education activities address the changing external environment and internal business needs.

  • Oversees and contributes content for aggregated Medical Education report (e.g., Symposia, Congress Summaries, and Grants and/or Sponsorship for Education)

Leadership

  • Participates in Medical Education Grants Matrix Team to maintain and communicate up-to-date knowledge of industry standards and practices

  • Keep abreast and proactively respond to trends and/or shifts in the external environment to maximize positive impact of Medical Education activities to HCPs, ultimately improving patient care and outcomes.

  • Builds and maintains effective strategic relationships and influence across MA Leadership and other relevant global and regional stakeholders.

  • Represents Astellas at global forums, conferences, and professional associations on Medical Education to contribute to shaping future industry best practices.

  • Maintains high-quality standards for MA that ensure consistent and compliant behavior and drives excellence in Medical Education activities.

Quantitative Dimensions:

  • Oversight of medical education activities for applicable TA/Products, including symposia, congress summary meetings, grants and/or sponsorships for education (~1-2M USD/ FY)

  • Oversight of Educational Outcome Assessment related to educational activities for applicable TA/products (~70-100 educational activities, eg symposia, congress summary, grants/IME)

  • Oversight of content development vendors

Organizational Context:

  • Demonstrates effective leadership with both internal and external stakeholders (Commercial, E&C, Legal, global TA Heads (VPs), Medical Communication Head (VP) and regional MA Heads (SVP) and strong collaboration with Core Medical Team Leads (snr Dir- Ex Dir))

  • Part of Medical Education group in Medical Communications

  • Reports to Senior Director, Medical Education

  • Member of 1-3 Core Medical Teams (CMTs)

  • Member of Medical Education matrix team

  • This position will have impact for many MA colleagues through providing subject matter expertise, representing Astellas in external professional societies and establishing/maintaining effective organization relationships.

  • This position is both internal and external facing.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Minimum 5-7 years of scientific/medical experience in global pharmaceutical industry environment

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience and deep knowledge in Medical Education strategies and programs (CME/ company-directed education) and related MA disciplines.

  • Advanced Degree in a health-related science

  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of legal/regulatory/compliance/pharmaceutical requirements and guidelines with respect to Medical Education activities, and other MA-related activities within pharmaceutical industry.

  • Demonstrates the ability to review/understand complex scientific and medical data from clinical and non-clinical trials.

  • Demonstrates business acumen

  • Ability to influence (without authority) and build strong relationships cross functionally, at all levels in an organization

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities with a high level of efficiency

  • Experience managing external MA-support agencies

  • Strong problem-solving skills, strategic capabilities, planning and organization skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills in English, with an ability to interact at all levels of personnel
