Astellas is announcing a Scientist I, Translational Sciences opportunity based out of the Mitobridge site in Cambridge, MA.

Purpose:

The primary focus of this Scientist I position is to design and conduct experiments in the laboratory to advance and support autophagy and mitochondrial projects in the early discovery pipeline. Additional responsibilities include partnering across research divisions, working collaboratively with both internal and external experts and to identify ways to advance early-stage drug discovery programs. Individual must be highly motivated, capable of working with multidisciplinary research teams and have a demonstrated track record of success in independent scientific research. The successful candidate will be an outstanding scientist with strong conceptual and practical experience in the following areas: Biochemistry, Cell biology and Molecular biology.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop and validate biochemical, biophysical, molecular biology and cell biology experiments to support various needs of the multiple discovery projects.

  • Independently trouble shoot experiments to optimize the assays for SAR.

  • Develop novel cellular disease models to explore the therapeutic hypothesis.

  • Provide scientific guidance in designing and implementing cell biology, in vivo pharmacology, and biomarker related studies.

  • Contribute to target and indication selection for different programs in the company

  • Work with external CROs and academic laboratories - establish new partnerships and manage the existing ones.

  • Analyze, interpret, and summarize the experiment data both in written and oral reports. Effectively draw conclusions from the results and define next steps. Maintain a detailed lab notebook. Present the program updates to diverse set of audience.

  • Work in a fast-paced environment and meet the goals in the targeted time frame.

  • Keep abreast of emerging developments in the fields of various biology like Autophagy, Mitochondrial biology and Protein Homeostasis that would advance the existing programs and identification of new discovery programs.

  • Collaborate with diverse project teams internally and externally to advance the programs.

Qualifications:

Required

  • PhD. with 0-3 years, MS with 6+ years or BS with 8 + years of highly relevant assay development experience in a biopharmaceutical setting.

  • Extensive experience in biochemical & cell-based assay development and optimization.

  • Strong knowledge on various cell signaling pathways especially in protein degradation and mitochondrial signaling.

  • Highly organized, self-motivated, results driven and a collaborative person.

  • Demonstrated creativity and novel approaches to solving scientific problems.

  • Highly independent thinker with the ability to translate abstract concepts and complexity into actionable solutions.

  • Knowledge of small molecule drug discovery.

  • Experience presenting the scientific data and concepts to diverse set of audience.

  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills with an enthusiasm for participating in a fast-paced environment characterized by rigorous science and innovative thinking.

Preferred

  • In-depth knowledge of protein homeostasis

  • Experience in small molecule and/or proximity inducing drug discovery

  • Deep understanding and experience of using in vivo disease models from rodents to non-human primates and human disease samples

  • Experience working within large pharma organizations and/or biotech/start up environment
