Astellas is announcing a Finance Manager, Global Development -- US opportunity in Northbrook, IL.

Purpose & Scope:

This position is responsible for the financial reporting and analysis of Immunology and Neuroscience clinical development project expenses for Global Development (GD). This role will assist in summarizing and analyzing financial plan and financial results data for project expenses using information provided by teammates in the US, EU and Japan. It also provides financial support to Immunology and Neuroscience department heads and project leadership teams to more effectively achieve goals and improve processes. It supports the objectives of the Associate Finance Director, Immunology and Neuroscience Development, the Global Budget and Control team, and the US Regional Finance team.

This role has important partnerships with Global Development leaders in the US and peers within the Global Budget and Control team members supporting Global Development in Leiden and Tokyo.

This role will meet regularly with Global Development Immunology and Neuroscience therapeutic leaders and project leaders based in the US.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide all stakeholders with accurate, timely financial information to support decision making, business driver awareness, financial reporting, and enabling compliance with policies, regulations, and laws.

  • Develops and consolidates financial plans (managerial and statutory basis) for Global Development Immunology and Neuroscience US-based activities.

  • Performs variance analysis, monitors financial performance against budget and forecast, and collaborates with business partners to control development expenses. "Hands on" participation in the preparing financial reports for the US-based operations is required. Works with Global Development leaders to explain results and adjust business plans to achieve goals while meeting financial and headcount targets.

  • Assists the Associate Finance Director, Immunology and Neuroscience Development with summarizing financial plans and results as needed.

  • Performs month-end close activities for Global Development Immunology and Neuroscience US-based operations including journal entries (accruals, reclass, amortization). Prepares some accounting entries for the close in the US, reviews and may approve entries by the Finance Analyst -- Global Development Immunology and Neuroscience -- US. Collaborates with local accounting / shared services teams and Global Budget and Control team to produce timely and accurate financial information for Global Development's US-based activities.

  • Conducts financial reviews with stakeholders as needed.

  • Develops ad hoc reports and financial models as required.

  • Maintains compliance with GAAP/IFRS, J-SOX, and other regulatory requirements.

  • Identifies and supports opportunities for process improvements within own activities and stakeholders' operations

  • Support and/or lead various B&C financial initiatives as needed

Organizational Context:

  • This position reports to the Associate Finance Director, Immunology and Neuroscience Development - US, based in Northbrook, IL USA.

  • The primary partners of this role are global Immunology and Neuroscience therapeutic heads of Global Development and development project leaders.

  • This position is part of the Global Budget and Control team that provides services to all the business units reporting to Astellas' Chief Medical Officer.

  • There are roles on the Global Budget and Control team based at Northbrook supporting other business units. Collaboration and best practices sharing across the Global Budget and Control team will be expected.

  • There are complexities associated with this role:

o This position has responsibilities for leading work focused on the Global Development's

Immunology and Neuroscience project budgets.

o Global Development has been globalizing its operating structure the past several years. Ways of working continue to evolve and the financial management support will need to meet their changing needs.

o This finance team is newly globalized (at 2014). There will be ongoing work to standardize and improve the data, practices, and information content from this team.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Undergraduate degree with emphasis in Finance/Accounting or related business degree, or Life Sciences undergraduate / MBA combination

  • 7+ years of financial analysis and / or accounting experience, preferably in a multi-national, multi-currency environment

  • 2+ years' experience managing and/or coaching staff

  • 3+ years in a finance business partner role

  • Experience supporting biopharma R&D preferably in Development finance or planning role

  • Experience working with enterprise grade accounting, reporting and ERP systems (SAP, Hyperion, etc.)

  • Effective interpersonal skills and with ability to operate among diverse cultures

  • Strong analytical skills that can turn data into useful information

  • Working knowledge of internal controls and J-Sox.

  • Working knowledge of IFRS.

  • Strong teamwork and partner behaviors

  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills in English

  • Adept with MS Office applications

  • Working knowledge of Pharma R&D Business accounting and financial processes

Preferred:

  • CPA, CA, CMA, CIMA, CGMA or equivalent

  • MBA

  • Experience with SAP and BPC.

  • Experience improving financial planning and reporting activities
